I'm not that big into funk but Les Claypool is my favorite bassist of all time. In fact Primus is probably the only funk band I even like

Efrim Menuck from Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The man's compositional skills, and lyrics are both mind-blowingly good. The first time I listened to F♯ A♯ ∞, I was totally drawn into the music, and from that point on, I was a dedicated fan of GY!BE. I actually managed to track down an original pressing of the album when I was in NYC a few months ago, and it was one of the happiest vinyl purchases I've ever made (and it was quickly followed by two more albums I'd been hunting for forever, so I was pretty happy with my trip to the Big Apple).
