Hey, I need suggestions for a 7 string guitar. I'd be using it for some metal, but also jazz and things like that, so it needs to be versatile. I also don't want a super metal looking guitar, so not black and pointy haha. I really loved the 7 string petrucci I played, but it's a bit out of my price range.. I'm looking for something more in the <$800 range., and I will definitely go used. What are my options?

Ibanez RG7620s can be had for $500 and less.
I'm drawing a blank on other 7's right now.

Is the carvin dc727 any good with a pickup change? I don't really have an opportunity to try one out around here

I've never played a Carvin. They have some pretty sweet options though. I know the pickup routes will need to be enlarged if you want to change them with Duncans or other brands. There's quite a few Carvin players here, i'm sure some of them will give you more info.

Ibanez 7421,7621,7420,7620, are all good choices!( with pickup upgrades). Schecter C7s, Carvins, and Dean Evo7s can be picked up used for a good price.

I agree with you. I would love to have a Petrucci 7 but it is very expensive! I will own one some day.

i didnt find the DC727 neck that much more comfortable then my Schecter C-7 blackjack.

i'd recommend the C-7 blackjack. that 5-way switch is a thing of beauty.

I would definitely go with the new schecter hellraiser c 7 TW models since they now have coil splitting emg 707s and nothing sounds jazzier than the hellraiser combo with the TOM tonepros bridge the set mahogany neck etc etc. that hits near your target budget but with a sweet and powerful or even explosive sound at your fingertips.

It's good even without the pickup change. I've got two, one with stock pups and one with Blazes. The Blaze's are less 'crunchy', smoother, less bluesy, but they're both good in their own right. You need to learn to love the volume knob on the Carvin if you play clean a lot. Rolling it off just a hair really cleans it up.

Are carvins in the <$800 range? Maybe Schecter C7 Blackjack ATX?
