I boosted it with an SD-1 and a Seymour Duncan 805 and neither made it tight enough for anything below about drop B. It was ok there and up but still had a very grating top end compared to the DSL100.

I'm not sure any Marshall is going to sound good for Drop B... Maybe the JVM?

JVM for sure. JCM2000 50 watt did great, even held up a little in drop G#, the new DSL 100 might even do ok, but the lack of the OD 1 channel kills the 20 watt head in my experience.

I had some surprisingly good results using a JVM in B and drop A. It's my favorite Marshall for metal next to the Gen 1 Valve State

If only the JVM didn't cost like 3 grand+ here lol

You may want to look around post-price drops (of course nobody has stock at this point...)
