The reverse, inline head stocks have a lot of length behind the nut on the wound strings, which causes them to vibrate. Slam an open chord and quickly mute it, and you can hear the high pitched ring in the background. This is why I put a piece of foam behind the nut of my guitars. The Jackson COW7 has the exact same problem. Mike's 4+3 Soloist doesn't exibit this at all, and neither did my standard, inline Jackson Stars.

Another factor is that the KXK headstocks don't tilt back as far as Jacksons, for example, so you get more string vibration above the neck.

Really nice man. Awesome access to the higher frets and I love that low profile bridge that KXK uses, and some other companies like Carvin as well.

Sorry, no picstory--that's sorta like watching a whole bunch of "plot" to get to the porn. I'll just get right down to business....

I saw this quote, then saw some pics, and said "WTF, this is picstory" but after some thought and scrolling, realized that "hmmm I guess I do fast forward porn to the 'good stuff'"

super badass!!!!

not to nitpick - but is there anything about the guitar that you feel could be an area of improvement (either in the choices you made in the specs you submitted, or Rob's execution in achieving those features)?

Now that Rob has found his groove, it seems as though he is putting out nearly flawless instruments to the exact specs of his customers... and that is truely a major statement!

Congrats, Chris. That looks like an incredible guitar, and I know you're lovin' the hell out of it.

Yup. I left out all the "plot" of me lugging the box up the stairwell, grabbing a knife, opening the box, etc. Instead, I got right to the guitar porn.

Many of the picstories here are pretty entertaining, but I was way the fuck too impatient for that after waiting 1.5 years to get this guitar. :)

The only change I'd have made to the specs would be having regular-sized pickup routes, so that I could have either Phase 1 Blackouts or passives. But that's pure hindsight because I ordered the guitar before the Blackouts had even been announced, and I was more into the EMGs at the time. I've got a set of Phase 2 Blackouts I'm going to install this weekend.

As for Rob's execution, I'm totally happy so far. I haven't had a lot of time to play the guitar this week, and I still need to set it up properly. But a couple of years ago, I never would have thought I'd own a guitar like this.

that's pretty cool, knowing that through the past couple of years, you've tried pretty much EVERYTHING!

 that makes sense. That actually explains why I had to mute my old 6 string Ibanez, but never had to do the same to Carvin V220 (3+3).

Strangely enough the Carvins I've had are really bad with that; you have to foam it to keep those high pitched rings from showing up. Odd, considering the 4+3 config on them, like the KxK. The only thing I can figure is the size difference between the headstocks.

I wish someone in Chicago had one of these; I'd love to try it out!

Yeah, and I until I got my Jackson Stealth-7 and replaced the bridge 707 with a Blackout, I was never particularly satisfied with any of them. There was always something about the designs or the execution that didn't feel right for me. My Agile is pretty cool and a great value, but it's got that damned licensed Floyd on it. Moreover, the fit and finish, while better than most Korean guitars I've played, still aren't in the same league as a custom guitar.

Since I didn't/don't have the money to get a new custom Jackson or ESP seven, I figured I was probably out of luck. That's why I jumped so quickly on the KXK introductory offer once I had a chance to play the prototype. I probably was a bit overexcited when I talked about nothing under $4k comparing with this KXK, but seriously, you are not going to get $2,000 worth of additional value by ordering a custom shop Jackson or ESP over this guitar. They really are comparable. I can't compare this to what other small builders would do, however.

Carvin doesn't tilt back their headstocks at a very steep angle, either. That's probably advantageous on an 3x3 or regular inline 6-string, since you get less binding at the nut, but on a 7-string, I think it does help to have a steeper angle. The KXK 4x3 headstock is significantly smaller than Carvin's 4x3, and that probably helps. In fact, the headstock on my KXK probably couldn't be made much smaller than it is. It reminds me a little of the Carvin Holdsworth headstock that way, but obviously a little larger to hold the additional tuner. Probably not very 'metal', but very functional.

Looks sexy dude. I think the yellow looks cool. I wouldn't order it personally, but I think it still looks nifty. Certainly demands the attention of anyone with a direct line of site within 2 miles
