I like red guitars, but I'm not a fan of this red, personally. It's too dusty looking. Still like the guitar though!

Don't you see pickups' base plates? They are pretty much the same shape as the cavities.

Yes, I did see. My comment should have been clearer in that I think it looks hideous being that big of route even though it's because of the pickups.

Since nobody else wants to give you a straight answer - It's because the pickup tabs are that shape. Guthrie's pickups have custom baseplates and are held in by 4 screws rather than 2 in order to allow the tilt of the pickup to be adjusted as well as it's height - That way, no matter what way up the guitar is being held, or how much you're swinging around onstage, both coils of the pickup will be the proper distance from the strings - with only 2 screws, the pickup can flop around and it's tilt changes.

You can see the screws in this picture - http://www.capitolguitars.com/conte...l-guthrie-govan-birdseye-signature-model.jpeg

Interesting....I've never had a problem with any pickups held in by 2 screws on any guitar I've ever owned except when the foam underneath isn't seated right. But it's Guthrie's guitar so he must notice a difference.

Aww, I was hoping it would be his custom Strat. :(

I would eat a d*ck for one of those. A modern-feeling 22-fret Strat with a Floyd, yes please.

It's not a new idea - Musicman bass pickups have had a 3 screw arrangement for the same reason for decades.

It's awkward knowing folks can pick up a used GG Charvel for a grand off MAP and pay someone to make it red for less than this costs new.

Not my thing... the brown pickups don't blend well with that red finish, it actually looks cheap... the natural finish model looks way better.

I still prefer his Suhr, BTW.

Not a fan of red. If they did this in trans-aqua, trans-blue, trans-green, etc, i'd dig it a lot more.

That sounds like something that could only ever minutely change the tone. And on stage? I doubt I'd ever notice... But fair point.

GG referred to himself as a "pain in the arse" regarding the details of the instrument; with Michael Frank Braun informing him that only Eric Johnson had been a bigger one.

It makes a bigger difference than you'd think. If you've ever adjusted the poles on a humbucker to even up the output, you'll know that it takes a little to do a LOT.
