That was a tough situation. I love. Neurosis to pieces. Can't imagine how it must've felt for people who actually have a close relationship with the people in it.I'm sure they wish they could retroactively delete that asshole's parts now.

That top three is perfect. Emperor of Sand is so underrated among the rest of their discography imo. I think it's one of their best.OMRTS is definitely overlooked in their library, I'd put my rankings as:
1. Crack the Skye
2. Blood Mountain
3. Emperor of Sand

Blood Mountain is too riff salad for me in some parts but I haven't listened to it in quite a while so ima listen to it again and see if I feel differently. Sleeping Giant is easily one of my favorite Mastodon songs though. It's so good. Remission is my favorite because it's the angriest and most aggressive.I think y'all are the only ones I've seen ranking Blood Mountain at the bottom of their Big 4 albums, I'll throw my rankings up tomorrow at work when I'm bored but BM is a close 2nd for me after CtS.
I also listened to Hushed and Grim about a month ago because I forgot about it and I agree with Max, it should've been half as long. When the riffs hit, they fucking hit, but the majority of songs have filler verses, choruses, or bridges.
I'm sure they wish they could retroactively delete that asshole's parts now.
Holy fuck I had no idea this happened, what a piece of shit. That was a tough situation. I love. Neurosis to pieces. Can't imagine how it must've felt for people who actually have a close relationship with the people in it.
On the “everything is a blur” comment, I’d seriously give Emperor of Sand another go. It has the vibes.I gave a (re) listen to their last few albums because of this thread, but my list hasn't changed:
1- Leviathan, because I like this one the most.
2- Crack The Skye is their best album, but I still like Leviathan the most.
3- Blood Mountain, because it's good but Leviathan and Crack The Skye exist.
4- Once More Around The Sun, because I thought they lost it after The Hunter but they still had a few good songs in them it seems. Also I like the album's cover.
Albums prior to Leviathan don't sound "like Mastodon" to me (whatever that means) and everything else is a blur and starts to sound all the same to me. I don't think they had anything interesting to say after Crack The Skye. Maybe they should wait 100 hundred years until they REAAAALLY have something worth recording to release new albums, like Tool does / did.
Also The Hunter is a piece of shit and it shows they used everything they had in Crack The Skye. I like the album's cover (and maybe two songs) though.
Also their videos are cool, no matter the album.
Blood Mountain has kinda moved down the rankings for me recently. Brilliant out of the gate, some amazing moments, but some of the best bits are in whole songs that I don’t totally love. Pendulous Skin forever though.Blood Mountain, in retrospect, is a very transitional album. It's really good, but I think they were sort of prototyping the sound they would eventually nail on Crack The Skye.
Remission is just so heavy and angry and has such a frantic feel. Leviathan kept the heavy and made it a bit more fun, and I mean, what a fucking album: Blood and Thunder, Naked Burn, Megalodon, Aqua Dementia, Iron Tusk, Hearts Alive, it was like all singles and no fluff.
So it's not like Blood Mountain was bad, it's just with the first two LPs and the opus that is CTS, it's just a sort of the worst of the best you know?
I am very fond of the first half. The second half, hmm.Not a big fan, but I agree that The Hunter sucked.
