I've pretty much only listened to Emperor of Sands and Hushed and Grim since I've only gotten into them over the last year and a half. But I REALLY love these albums. I'm a big fan of what having 3 singers does to the music. And I like all three of their singing.

Pretty pumped for the next album, and hope they do another studio documentary because that's what got me into them to begin with.

Edit:
I'm doing to give Crack the Skye a serious listen tomorrow based on people's descriptions here.

I think y'all are the only ones I've seen ranking Blood Mountain at the bottom of their Big 4 albums, I'll throw my rankings up tomorrow at work when I'm bored but BM is a close 2nd for me after CtS.

I also listened to Hushed and Grim about a month ago because I forgot about it and I agree with Max, it should've been half as long. When the riffs hit, they fucking hit, but the majority of songs have filler verses, choruses, or bridges.
Blood Mountain is too riff salad for me in some parts but I haven't listened to it in quite a while so ima listen to it again and see if I feel differently. Sleeping Giant is easily one of my favorite Mastodon songs though. It's so good. Remission is my favorite because it's the angriest and most aggressive.

Blood Mountain, in retrospect, is a very transitional album. It's really good, but I think they were sort of prototyping the sound they would eventually nail on Crack The Skye.

Remission is just so heavy and angry and has such a frantic feel. Leviathan kept the heavy and made it a bit more fun, and I mean, what a fucking album: Blood and Thunder, Naked Burn, Megalodon, Aqua Dementia, Iron Tusk, Hearts Alive, it was like all singles and no fluff.

So it's not like Blood Mountain was bad, it's just with the first two LPs and the opus that is CTS, it's just a sort of the worst of the best you know?

I'm sure they wish they could retroactively delete that asshole's parts now.

That was a tough situation. I love. Neurosis to pieces. Can't imagine how it must've felt for people who actually have a close relationship with the people in it.
Holy fuck I had no idea this happened, what a piece of shit.

I gave a (re) listen to their last few albums because of this thread, but my list hasn't changed:

1- Leviathan, because I like this one the most.
2- Crack The Skye is their best album, but I still like Leviathan the most.
3- Blood Mountain, because it's good but Leviathan and Crack The Skye exist.
4- Once More Around The Sun, because I thought they lost it after The Hunter but they still had a few good songs in them it seems. Also I like the album's cover.

Albums prior to Leviathan don't sound "like Mastodon" to me (whatever that means) and everything else is a blur and starts to sound all the same to me. I don't think they had anything interesting to say after Crack The Skye. Maybe they should wait 100 hundred years until they REAAAALLY have something worth recording to release new albums, like Tool does / did.

Also The Hunter is a piece of shit and it shows they used everything they had in Crack The Skye. I like the album's cover (and maybe two songs) though.

Also their videos are cool, no matter the album.
On the “everything is a blur” comment, I’d seriously give Emperor of Sand another go. It has the vibes.

Blood Mountain has kinda moved down the rankings for me recently. Brilliant out of the gate, some amazing moments, but some of the best bits are in whole songs that I don’t totally love. Pendulous Skin forever though.

Yeah, Pendulous Skin is definitely a top 10 or 15 for me in the catalog. When Blood Mountain is good it's good.

My album ranking:
1. Crack the Skye
2. Blood Mountain
3. Once More 'Round the Sun
4. Leviathan
5. Emperor of Sand
6. Remission
7. Call of the Mastodon
8. Hushed and Grim
9. Cold Dark Place
10. The Hunter

Nothing too groundbreaking here, but I will say again that OMRtS has some absolute bangers and an incredible opener for any album, and it came around during a time in my life around a few other great albums that I hold dear.

Can I use this thread to state that I love the verse riffs in This Mortal Soil but the rest of the song makes it one of the weakest on the album. Totally baffling chorus and bridge.

Right and this happens too much, Sleeping Giant is the other prime example!!

I was not ready for The Hunter hate in this thread! This is like being a fan of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom all over again!

Is everyone’s main criticism “it’s not [insert one of their other sick as fuck albums here]?”

Some of my favourite Mastodon songs are on The Hunter, and I think they sounded their best on that tour, in my humble opinion, of course. The Live at Brixton album was this tour.

Someone pointed out the “stadium rockiness” of it which always translates better live than the technical stuff, which might be why I think they sounded best, with its Hunter-heavy setlist.

Going to list songs because albums is too hard. Like Michael Bolton, I celebrate the entire catalogue (Apologies to OMRTS, it’s my least familiar).

Roots Remain
Hand of Stone
Iron Tusk
Naked Burn
Stargasm
March of the Fire Ants
Seabeast
Ghost of Karelia
Sleeping Giant
Black Tongue
The Creature Lives

Yeah, probably.

It's not a bad album, and at least folks know about it, you're like the fifth guy who can't even remember a OMRTS song.

Which isn't surprising because it's also probably one of the more lackluster (in context) of their post CTS albums.

The singles were solid, and yeah, that was just about peak touring form from them with Brent in a good place and Bill starting to take care of his alcoholism. I think the set was also very new material heavy because by that point none of them liked playing anything off the first two albums.

Agree with Max, I don't hate the album, it's just my least favourite one from my favourite band, even if it is stadium rock-y. I think if they would've released Emperor of Sand after CtS, then OMRtS, and then The Hunter it wouldn't have been as much whiplash as coming off of CtS to The Hunter.

Also lol @ the Indiana Jones thing, that's awesome.

The Creature Lives
I think this song is the biggest black mark on The Hunter, and a song I actively skip. Quintessence is almost in the same category for me but it's just the chorus that I don't like and think doesn't fit in at all while the rest of the song is good (similar to what Gunch and fps said about This Mortal Soil and Sleeping Giant). Creature Lives just feels really out of place, but I think removing it from the rest of the album makes the whole package better.
