Crossposted from MG.org, because it took entirely too much time to do this.

Dateline: January 29, Metalguitarist.org. One Mr. Eelblack2 posts a classified ad for several items. That night, after some deliberation with my ever-tolerant girlfriend I stake my claim to one while I have the chance.

Dateline: January 30, PayPal.com. I initiate a transfer of funds from my bank account to pay for said item. Am subsequently told by Mr.Pal that processing would be complete on February 7.

Dateline: February 9, PayPal.com. Funds finally arrive in my account, and are immediately transferred to Mr. Eel. Item is mailed shortly thereafter.

Dateline: February 13, late afternoon, Ottawa, Ontario. Item is delivered to the UPS store in Ogdensburg, NY, just across the American border, and about a 45 minute drive away in good conditions. We leave the house to pick it up at approximately 4:30PM, trying to get in before the store closes at 6PM. The run to the border has begun!

Dateline: February 13, approximately 4:45PM, Ottawa, Ontario. Stupid fucking piece of shit traffic is getting in the fucking way. Get the hell off the road, you fucks!

Dateline: February 13, approximately 5:05PM, just outside of Ottawa, Ontario. Traffic has eased, no longer seething with rage. Roadward ho! Note that, even after two days of medium-to-heavy rain, it's still pretty frosty up round here.

Dateline: February 13, Approximately 6:35PM. A very nice customs agent pulls up Lee's sale posting on Sevenstring.org to verify that this guitar was, in fact, used.

.... Wait, $150 in customs? We hates it and we breaks resolution, we does. *Gollum Gollum*

Dateline: February 13, Approximately 9PM, return home after several intervening stops. Here are the new family pics. The 2228 really looks like my old, trusty 7420 just let itself get all fat around the edges. The 2027 remains classy next to all the black, shiny though the others might be. This pic is lacking several of my guitars, such as the Tele and acoustics, but it's still a nice shot.

So, early impressions? It feels good! Part of the reason I picked this up was to get a sense of how 8 strings feel before investing in a Sherman, and with my long-term familiarity with Ibanez's Wizard necks, the 2228 provides a good reference point in relation to what I'm already comfortable with.

It still has factory strings on it, so the low F# is really flabby, but I plan on finding a new set of strings in the near future. The fretboard could use some lemon oil, too, so I'll do that when I change strings.

The build construction seems pretty good, all things considered. I haven't been able to plug it in yet, but that'll come tomorrow.... Or, maybe tonight if the basement neighbours don't shut up any time soon.

I'll update with further impressions as they develop.

Thanks again, Lee!

Man, many thanks for the pictured retelling of this tale of wow and woe (at least you didn't have to pay the VAT). At least you didn't do the Gollum thing via Corey Feldman. ;)

Thanks for all the kind words, guys! It's been a blast to play, despite the floppy low F (I currently have it downtuned by a half-step). Like I said before, I hope to remedy that with a heavier gauge string - I'm thinking of a 0.74 at the moment, just to start. The 27" scale feels pretty good on the low Bb, and I don't find too many troubles bending the high Eb. I do miss my old many-fret stretches, though, especially as a Holdsworth-inspired player. Really, all of this combines to give me a pretty quick confirmation that what I really want is a fanned-fret instrument, since it would alleviate both scale-length related problems I'm facing.

So far, the EMGs don't seem like the best things for this guitar, but I sort of expected that. Dimarzio & Seymour Duncan really need to produce some passive 8 string pickups, if only to encourage guitar makers to put them in production instruments and spare us from the current 808 monopoly.

Despite all of this, there's much to be said for having such a massive range in the span of a hand-width. Even with just a couple of days on the guitar, I now know that, yes, having an 8 string is something I want to continue... Just with a few (relatively substantial) changes.

That's a good gauge for my schecter C-8, 26.5" scale and tuned to F# if you're into heavy handed riffing... but tuned to F and just 0.5" more? Hmmm... Maybe .80 will be better?
