I used a pre processed SSD4 Platinum kit. But I really EQed and Compressed the snare and kick. Everything else I left stock other than the overheards had a slight treble boost.

Do you think its redundant compression in the mixing and mastering stage seeing how the samples were pre processed? Or could it be a lack of contrast in the midi velocities?

Well, sounds to me the overheads didn't really need a treble boost.
And the kick just takes too much space - it's attack sustains in a wide range of the upper mids and highs for a long time and is so loud, that it silences the guitars.

That's what I meant by "overcompressing" - I've no idea if that's a word. Think it is.

The snare, on the other hand, seems to be quite quiet.

Next time you can try something else with the drums - go for a more natural tone on the kick and snare and send them on a seperate bus track. Compress the crap out of the bus and then mix it with the natural tracks to taste.

I'm still not really satisfied with it, but this is probably my best mix so far:

Noice
Maybe work on adding a liiiittle meat(low-mids) to the 'tars. The bass doesn't seem to take much space, either.

Well, all of these are damn good. You all should be proud. Makes me want to either crawl under a rock or break out my pile of recording books and hide in the studio a while.

here is a tune from my cd I did last year.

Well, the drums and vocals need some work, but at least the mix is glassy-damn-clear and gets the point across clearly.

There are a lot of good mixes in here:hbang:. I am incredibly jealous...

I guess this is the closest I have to a full completed song but there are lots of parts I'm not happy with still like my lazy drum programing...

and here is a small sample of my mix for my 7 string. I haven't written a full song with it yet.

Bass doesn't seem to take a lot of space in your mixes. Poor guy :(
Guitars sound sick, but I'm just thinking they may be a little bit overkill.

LOL... fucking sick

Will do :)

And the "bass" is just a pitch shifted guitar. I'm debating whether to go out and buy a bass strictly for demoing purposes, but I haven't yet.

Well, I'm no expert, but since insomnia isn't letting me sleep - thought I'd go thru this thread :)

Very scooped. Bass?

Sounds great. I'd say the guitars need a pinch of low-mids, because they sound a bit "hollow" at spots. Especially the single guitar that kicks in at 0:22

Thanks for the feedback dude. The guitar at 0:22 is left intentionally hollow but i do agree that the main guitars need some more low mids. i've actually just made a patch correcting that problem!

I don't have too many of my own songs completed yet.

This is a little sample of my latest original tune that I am doing which is a bit more doomy/metal than the first couple of songs I did :D

I've been recently working on songs recorded by other bands and mixing them in my own vision. Been doing this for about two weeks now. I started with the feared mixing competition as the first song that I mixed using someone elses material!

First time really working with drums from a mic'd source and vocals.

Here's another song I just finished a couple days ago for another mixing competition.

I made a critical error in how I set up my bass so it might be lacking some balls on here.

This mix I started working on last night. It is not complete so you don't have to listen since this is for completed mixes. BUT, this is my first time trying to nail a good sound reamping the guitars through free amp sims.

Here are a couple more electronic-oriented tunes I did not too long ago. These are pretty much my first completed songs that I actually took the time to mix. These you don't have to listen but I think i'm coming along quite well from where I was on these songs not long ago.
