Pot values for rail singles?

Are single coil sized rail and humbuckers meant to have 250k pots or 500/1meg? Since it’s assumed that you are leaving the stock strat pots in?

I think all of my single coil stuff (no P90's) are 250k. I'd imagine 1 Meg would be insufferably bright and awful sounding.

They’re typically single coil sized stacked humbuckers rather than actual single coils, but are often brighter than regular humbuckers, so I would look at 250k, 330k, or 500k at most.

Depending on your switch, you can use a 500k volume pot and wire in an additional 500k resistor that only affects the positions with the single coils so they "see" a 250k load. I have a setup like that on my one HSS guitar and it sounds pretty balanced across the switch positions :2c:
