so... I've been listening to various kinds of music for a number of years now... in a way i feel that i've come to the end of what the mainstream has to offer. it started with slipknot, the only heavy thing i could get my hands on (don't hate, they do what they do well, and i'm a drummer, joey is a beast, but danny carey is better)

my main musics of choice are mainly come between Metal, and Alt rock, but lately i've been getting into jazz and classical because i feel i've found all there really is in metal and alt rock, that i can find...

for metal, i really dig:

Protest the Hero (for everything)
Sikth (for everything)
After the burial (for guitar and drums)
Animals as Leaders (everything)
Born of Osirus (for the staggaring rhytmic diversity)
Opeth (for the wonderful groove and contrast)

For alt rock:

Circa survive (for everything)
Coheed and cambria (for everything)
Dead Letter Circus
Emarosa
Lydia
Porcupine Tree
Saosin

as for classical, it's schumann, Chopin, Cliburn, and Lehar
as well, any Jazz recommendations, i really don't know where to start....

ANY AND ALL RECOMMENDATIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

tool. Their music, to me, is just amazing.
A Perfect Circle- same singer as tool (he's amazing. one of my absolute favorites), very good alt. rock band.
Scale The Summit. Instrumental metal, not really shreddy, just awesome.

As for Jazz... it's a bit broad, just like metal. my favorites are Guthrie Govan (fusion, insane dude), Pat Metheny (same as last guy), Mike Stern, Jim Hall. Joe Pass... long list. those are all guitar players though, so I don't really know if that's what you're looking for.

Hope I've been helpful~

Kiko Loureiro - Sick playing. Try his album: No Gravity.
Janne Da Arc - Greatest. Band. Ever.
Sugizo - His melodic sense, dynamics, and tones are top notch. Try his post Luna Sea work for more electronic elements.

For Metal - Everything by Mikael Åkerfeldt, Dan Swanö, and Marty Friedman!

As for metal, you may want to give Emperor a shot. They really stand out and are far away from the black metal bands like Mayhem practice.
As for classical, it kinda depends on what flavor you like. Romantic stuff is what I can relate to the most - Beethoven, Brahms, Rachmaninov, Grieg, Tchaikovskiy etc., you will most certainly find tons of recommendations for those composers alone.
If you want some 20th century stuff, Shostakovich is a real monster. There are also some jazz pieces from him. Bartok also comes to mind, Holst's "The Planets" is a popular favorite too.
Baroque is not my forte, and besides Bach and Vivaldi I don't really listen to that much, but there's a lot of fun to be had there as well.

If you want "Groove" and "Jazz" and "Metal" than Atheist should get a mention.
