My "internet day" usually starts with a cup of coffe at work and the GMD thread on seventring.org :yesway:

One thing I've noticed is that rarely anyone comments on member's "new band" threads. We've all seen the "my new band put a song up, check out my new band etc." threads but members rarely ever comment or give their "musical input" on the topic at hand.

Now that I've said that I gotta admit that I do the same thing

and I really don't know why I do that

I hear a song, say "meh" or something like that out loud and move on to the next thread, guitar site, porn *cough*, news etc.

guess that kinda answers my own question

your thoughts?

Pretty simple, as you said yourself.

99% of the bands people on this forum play in are simply nothing worth noticing, let alone write about. We can't all be *INSERT YOUR FAVOURITE BAND HERE*.

It's okay.

I check it out, I just don't normally post. I like to see / hear what the members on here are doing musically. Its interesting to hear the diverse styles of creativity.

But my mother always told me, "If I don't have anything nice to say..."

I check almost everything out, but comment only on stuff that grabs me.

If I was commenting on everything, I would probably get a lot of negative rep. sayin'

If something piques my interest- if it's a style I enjoy or by someone the on the board I like- then I'll give it a listen. And if deliberate bandspam is deliberate, I'll ignore it- I'm here to talk about guitars, gear, and music not to be a recipient of marketing.

It seems like 9 of out 10 member recordings that are posted here are better-suited for the Recording subforum. Super-rough demos, tone-tests, and tablature IMHO don't really belong in General, and it's irksome (and less likely to earn a listen) when something is posted in the wrong section just to get more prospective clicks.

I agree. I feel that the "check out this song my band made, that no one has heard of" should be in the recording section. That's what I do when I want some opinions on my stuff.

Alot of it stems from being at work and not wanting to break out the headphones.

I post my stuff every now and then, sometimes even rough edits. There's some good stuff up here, and mine isn't always amazingly technical or even recorded really well. Sometimes i don't get any comments, which is fine.

There's satisfaction in just posting it somewhere so at least it can be listened to.

I haven't posted any of my recent writing here, outside of the soundcloud link in my sig, just because I'm pretty sure I won't get any feedback. xD

Unfortunately I don't really check out this section, every now and then I see something and comment, but I'm in the luthiery section having my mind blown

FWIW, what I've heard of your band has been excellent.

I give people 5 seconds for a tone test and 20 seconds for a whole song.

I don't comment on a tone test if it's a vanity project or someone just unwilling to commit to a tone (one of my pet hates). Usually this is really obvious when a tone test is really something you should be using on an album.

For full songs after 20 seconds if it's just the same old run of the mill average stuff that's posted here I'll stop listening and won't say anything. Unless I can genuinely hear something obvious to fix in their mix, or it's awesome I'm just going to move on.

I like to think I do actually contribute to threads with genuine questions that I can help with, but when the question is "how do I make my mix better?"... my answer is always going to be "practice and study - the more you know about how sound works and how the devices you use work, the better your mixes will be"

It's just kinda of annoying that the recording studio section has become a self promotion section. I want to talk about mixing and recording techniques, not your bands latest song. I just posted a thread about recording on a budget with a bunch of links for some excellent free and well priced software. Over 70 views and no comments! I think this forum should make a band self promotion section.

Ideally:

General Music Discussion: Discussion of established acts, touring/gigging bands with recorded material, tours, full CD releases, etc.

Recording: Sound tests, covers, work in progress, clips, one-off recordings.

At least that's what I try to do when I move stuff.

As for band spam, no matter what section it is, as long as it's only one thread I let it stay. The second someone bombs the forum I delete and ban.

I comment when I can on most peoples stuff. Some music I just can't. It would be me telling them what they should do and probably look like an a**hole. There are a lot of ppl that will ask "what should I do about interfaces,DAW,and monitors etc. etc." I usually just say "do the research". I had to learn on my own. This forum has helped a lot and by just typing in google what I wanted to know then reading endlessly. They write books on certain subjects that would require a good hour to type on the forums just to reply. Everyone needs help from time to time so I chime in when I can.
I do understand the "shameless self promotion" aspect. I'm guilty but not for promoting. I'm not going anywhere with my music. I want a good set of ears that knows what they are doing to critique the mix.

You need to get your ears checked bro

But if you mean Hexis, then prepare for a treat, since that band will probably get better now that I'm no longer writing anything for them. I never really could wrap my head around that style of music
