Name/age/location:

Friend For A Foe: Chris Purvis / 24 / American Serving in the Middle East (and looking forward to moving back Stateside in December)

Greg Pope: Greg Pope / 24 / London, England

Who are your biggest musical influences?

FFAF: I have a pretty big selection of influences so I don't want to crowd up this section too much:lol: As far as what I was listening to during the creation of this song, I'd have to say Thrice, Meshuggah, Killswitch Engage, Textures, Vildhjarta, and After the Burial. A lot of the forum members that post in the Recording section of ss.org have a definite influence on my music as we're all pretty tight giving each other critiques, advice, and props. To name drop just a few: Greg Pope (obviously:lol:), Keith Merrow, Chimpspanner, Slampop, Kalevala, IconW, Sora, Bulb, and Mattayus. There's more, but those are the member names I could remember right this second:lol:

For those who haven't yet heard your song, describe "Repeat" in seven words or less:

FFAF: Textured, Brutal, Melodic, Djenty, Chuggaliscious, and Radical.

What was the writing process like for "Repeat"?

Much like how I normally write songs... randomly chunk by chunk:lol: I tried to get the basic song stucture down with some basic sequenced drums. Once it sounded like an actual song, I go through it all, move sections around, make the drums more intricate, add riffs, harmonies, melodies, etc etc then BAM... I have me a new song! With this, I had finished what I thought was a completed song until Greg Pope and I started coming up with some ideas...

How did the two of you come to collaborate on the track?

FFAF: ...Aaaaaaaand to continue the question before this, Greg and I are pretty good internet pals who have a lot of respect and admiration for eachother's work. As I'm looking at finishing my EP "The Sky and the Fall", I'm always looking for able-bodied vocalists to do guest spots on my tracks to help me essentially "fill in the blanks" on my songs. Greg and I worked together previously on my song "Reunion" and I really started writing this song with Greg's vocals in mind. I really wanted to do another track with him as he's a phenomenal vocalist who really knows how to mix beauty coelesced with brutality.

I sent him an MP3 of the old version of the song (available on my soundclick.com page) for him to work off of. Our writing process normally consists of him recording rough ideas and sending me snippets so I can critique and build ideas for how it should sound. Sections of the song that we're both happy with are re-recorded so they're the best quality they can be. Sometimes his vocal ideas inspire me to revisit or add new sections like the clean part at 3:54. Once we're both content with all of his parts and after I've re-recorded all of my instrumentals, he sends the vocal files to me for me to tweak and peak, mix, touch up, and EQ. Once THAT's complete I send him another MP3 for final approval. After a few weeks of this tedious process, you get to hear our final product!

What gear was used for the recording of "Repeat"?

FFAF: -Orginally recorded with my Schecter C7 Hellraiser w/Seymour Duncan Blackouts, but I opted for the C8 Hellraiser in the final version because the EMG-808s are some amazing pickups that have a warmer/looser feel to them

-Schecter Custom Stiletto 5-string Bass

-Line 6 POD X3 Live

-Recabinet's Guitar Cab Impulses

-Amplitube Ampeg SVX

-Steinberg's Nuendo 3

-Toontrack's Superior Drummer 2.0 ... used some of the Avatar kit mixed with the Metal Foundry upgrade

-Voxengo Curve EQ's 60-band equalizer

-Waves RComp

-Waves SSL Channel Compression

-Steinberg's Dynamic Compression (I use different compressions for different instruments ... all instuments and compression VST plug-ins aren't made equally!)

-Steinberg's ReverbB

-Melodyne
