Hey guys, I've calculated some string gauges that I think I'll like on my 8-string using some tension calculators, but I want some seasoned players to tell me whether it's a good idea or not. Here:
E4 . .010" PL == 8.25kg
B3 ..014" PL == 9.07kg
G3 ..018" PB == 8.34kg
D3 ..026" PB == 10.08kg
A2 .036" PB == 11.12kg
E2 .046" PB == 10.13kg
B1 .06" PB == 9.51kg
F1# .08" PB == == 8.65kg
total == 75.13kg

I'm trying to approximate the tension I get out of my Les Paul with 11s. My scale length is 27". Thoughts?

Balanced tone is more important. Meshuggah use 9-11-16-26-36-46-52-70 fwiw.

Change your G string to 'PL' and the rest to 'NW' to get the right tension. Unless you want to use a wound acoustic phosphor bronze string.

Ahh, stupid of me to glaze over those details. I'll recalculate. . . Do the tone balance and string tension have to be mutually exclusive? I definitely get its importance, but I don't like lighter strings. Also, Meshuggah uses 29" scale lengths, don't they? That .09 will feel pretty tight.

let me also express my interest in this thread as I am also trying to figure out what strings to use for F standard tuning on 27" scale. I basically just want to cover meshuggah songs by myself in my room. But like dudeman said Meshuggah has a scale difference of 2+" so I probably shouldn't use the same strings as them...

E4 .011 dapl == 18.48#
B3 .014 dapl == 16.81#
G3 .018 dapl == 17.5#
D3 .028 danw == 20.07#
A2 .038 danw == 20.33#
E2 .049 danw == 18.54#

len 27
E4 .010 dapl == 18.18#
B3 .013 dapl == 17.25#
G3 .017 dapl == 18.58#
D3 .026 danw == 20.63#
A2 .036 danw == 21.9#
E2 .046 danw == 19.6#
B1 .060 danw == 18.48#
F1# .080 danw == 18.58#

This looks pretty close, and it would be fairly easy to obtain. Just a normal .010 - .046 set + .060 + .080

I'd go on the Circle K forums and ask knuckle head. He can set you up for sure.

Thanks for doing the calculations for me dude! I'll try that out. If it doesn't work, I'll go talk to knuckle head. Really appreciate it!
