So now that I again have a 2nd 7 string I was thinking of trying Open C tuning and learning some SYL tunes. I havent messed with alternate tunings on 7's before so what gauges should work for this? Tried using the existing strings (10-54? cant recall what they are exactly) and the low E and B were way too floppy.

Thanks for your suggestions in advance.

Add some thicker strings at the bottom, maybe something 002-006 bigger than extisting set you have.

I would get a 11-54 ish set, and swap the top string out for an 8 or 9, then get a 66-68 for the G.

I think Devon uses a .010 - .052 set with a .070 for the G.

according to the video he did about his gear, he huses 54-10, and a .70 for the G :)

although the low G is on a 27" 7 string, so that might have thinner gauges for the rest of the strings...

Yeah, Devin uses a 10-52 set. He talks about it a little past half way through the first of these videos (I'll post both parts, though, 'cause they're spiffy).

You are most correct, this was stated in the Guitar Player article on SYL.

Devin's mah hero.

Anything from a 62-70 should work fine, I use a 60 but its a bit floppy.

It's d'Addario .010 - .052 + .064, you can see it on the Ziltoid bonus vid

In the video it shows a 60, and he says in the Guitar Player interview back in '06 that he used a 70 for the G. I'd lean towards the 70, the 60 seems a bit floppy.

Oooops, sorry, you're right it's .060 for the G.

It seems quite floppy but his custom ESP 7 is 27"...
