One of the problems that I have run into is finding the right 7 string set for myself.

On my 6 string electric guitars, I had a local shop that carried a custom set of: 9-11-16-24-36-46. My ideal 7 string set would be: 9-11-16-24-36-46-(58 or 60)

Does anyone know of such a set? Otherwise I would get the GHS-GB7L and swap out the 32-42 with 36-46 trashing two strings.

Awesome, Noodles. Thanks for the tip bro! :yesway:

No prob. Poke around here a little more, there are a few threads floating around about balanced tension string sets that should be helpful when creating your own custom sets.

I'd link to one, but that would require me to use the search function right now...

That's cool. A good savings too.

It looks like from JustStrings the D'Addario Electric Guitar 3 Pack Environmental XL Super Light Top/Regular Bottom would suit me, .009 - .046, EXL125-3D and then I'll add either a 056, 059 or 060.

What do you guys think?

Also, could you be so kind as to throw up the gauge that you are currently using on your 7.

Im using 9.5's and my B is a 56 and my E is a 42 for comparison.

Stilzkin, you don't find that the 56 is too light? It doesn't flub up on you for fast rhythm attack?

Check out their bulk strings and build your own custom sets. They don't tell you the manufacturer, but the general consenses is D'addario.

Mod: Fixed URL

So here's what I came up with. Seems cheap. I'd pay twice this at GC. GC charges a buck just for a single. JustStrings charges 2.90 for 12. Sounds fishy. No? 42.62 total!!!

I use Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky 009 - 046 and an additional 056 (D'addario)

Webstrings.com 10-46 with a D'Addario 64 on the bottom (standard tuning, 25.5" scale) :hbang:

I just am about to experiment with that gauge (Miss UV's). Except with Elixir NanoWeb strings. Normally I use 9-42+56.

Do you think a 58 is too thick? I don't want any flubby 7th string that's why I'm trying the 58. Vigier actually recommends a 09-60, but I thought to try the 56 first.

This seems to best the best route-though I have yet to do it.
I buy a lot of single strings from musicians friend.

Yeah, I placed a bulk order yesterday based on Noodle's recommendation.

I'll be able to tell if in fact they are D'Addario, that's what I use the majorty of the time if they are available. Heck, it's hard to beat <$50 for 12 sets!

I'm using this custom set I put together on juststrings.com from a 12-52 set and a couple singles:

.009
.012
.016
.028
.038
.052
.070

All GHS strings. It's a balanced tension set like WayneCustom7 explained in his threads. The high unwound strings are all around 13 or 14 pounds of tension, and the wounds are all nice and tight at around 23 to 24 pounds. This is on a 26 1/2" scale Schecter 007 Blackjack.

Interesting set there Mind Riot. I thought the point of the extended scale was that you didn't need monster gauges to achieve the same tension though. My bandmates C7 Blackjack has 10-56 and its fairly tight feeling tuned to B.
