Some people say they don't like the Deathbar in the bridge, but IIRC one guy here ended up just pushing the pickups harder and he got a better sound out of it. Maybe that'll help?

If you want an edgier tone out of the Lace pickups all you need to do is install a Seymour Duncan Blackout Preamp in place of the volume pot. You'll keep the cleans and have an easier time with the dirty stuff.
