Just read the news that someone got stabbed and robbed in broad daylight (well, 8pm but it's still daylight at that time at this time of the year) just 0,3 miles away from my place last Saturday. How the fuck am I supposed to go on for a walk during the winter when it's dark 99% of the time if that shit happens even when the sun is up. And no, I'm not paying 50€ a month for a gym membership. Would be cheaper to buy a treadmill to home but I can't really fit one in my crappy apartment. Maybe I'll just buy a flip knife for self-defense (in Minecraft). #3rdworldproblems #fuckstreetcrime

Any additional context on that one? Sometimes it's totally random and sometimes it's pervasive but typically it seems to be one or two known brazen dickheads around the neighborhood.

Getting a new roof installed tomorrow. $65,000-$85,000 depending on how much plywood is needed. All I can think about is how many ESP/PRS/Anderson etc I could have bought.

Counterpoint, how important is a roof really? Maybe just erect a little tent village inside on a more practical budget

Don't know anything else about this case except the victim was a minor and judging by the security cam footage so was the perpetrators. A a few years ago a paperboy got killed in the middle of the night just a few blocks away. If you'd ask me about my neighborhood, I'd say it's pretty peaceful but obviously it's not. When you live in "the projects" you always get people from all walks of life.

Feels like this thread is poppin' off pretty good today, must be the Monday effect 😁

Currently fantasizing about giving my manager my 2 weeks, and how awesome that would feel. Then thinking about how 6 months from now it would probably not be so awesome lol.

This could also be part of "The Portland Experience" package

Damn man, that sucks, is insurance helping?
I dropped $20k a while back but no plywood needed, just brand new thicc double tyvek or whatever and new rain channels. I had interior leaks so was sweating that whole mess. Living in a dehydrator helps I guess.

Nah no insurance help. It was last done in '99 so it's just time. Sprung a small leak last fall so we had it patched, shopped around, and signed a deal. I'm more than a little nervous about what will be discovered. The job starts tomorrow so we'll see.

My awesome sleep patterns are continuing.

Had a massive fight with our 8yo yesterday and thanks to that it took me until 11pm to get the kids to bed. Then she went to the toilet twice within an hour and once more at around 2am which ended with her somehow cutting herself on some paper, so then I had to get up to put some bandaid on it.

... And then both my daughters woke up at 6am again, one hour before the alarm.

So my daughter's fixing to start school and she's taking Spanish. My wife was telling me since I work with a bunch of Mexicans, I probably know a little Spanish, so I can help her. Which is true, I do work with Mexicans, and know a little Spanish, but it's a blue collar job. A good like 90-95% of the Spanish I know is just insults, slurs and cuss words.

I don't know how good Dad's gonna be able to help with the Spanish homework, unless her teacher's a bitch, I could help with that.

I fully updated my Raspberry Pi's and NanoPi yesterday (they're running Arch Linux ARM, so rolling release), and I was happy at first because it seemed like everything went smoothly. But turns out it didn't, I had to fight the latest version of Home-Assistant almost all day before I got everything working again :wallbash:

... but now pretty much everything works.

The cool thing about having 20 guys on my roof is that now I'm not the only one on the block running a straw hat.

I'm not having a good time anymore. 3 days ago I took out my window air conditioner, disassembled it, and did a ton of mold killing treatment and an overall clean-out outside. Full hose treatment and toothbrush scrubbing. Then I put it back in.

I didn't see a need to remove it before the roof went on because they use a shroud on the sides of the house to act as an escalator for debris. It worked beautifully all day yesterday. First thing this morning the shroud collapses in one single place. The spot where my AC is. The top of the casing has vents. All the dust and shingle debris immediately went into it.

Mind you, this AC is not a perfect fit. Every time I install it I have to gorilla tape the shit out of it to keep it sealed from bugs getting in.

I just had to do the disassembly and cleaning all over again. And I'm not putting it back in until they're done. And it's going to reach almost 90 Fahrenheit today. And my house sits in such a way that the sun angle beats in from about 1pm until nearly sunset, so it's usually about 10 degrees warmer inside than outside without climate control.

Of course this isn't what I'm truly angry about. It's just the straw on the camel's back. I have a real tale of financial and familial woe to share once it gets sorted. Hoping there is resolution by fall so I can tell it, because it's a doozy and almost unbelievable.
