I couldn't read through 11 pages, but we've had more than a few legends come through this area. (I grew up in the Washington DC metro area)

To name but a few:

Duke Ellington
Bad Brains
Minor Threat
Henry Rollins (used to work at Haagen Dazs ice cream)
Fugazi (and several other Ian MacKaye projects)
Scream (Dave Grohl's old hardcore band, he was a local guy.)
Not to mention Thievery Corporation..
Honorable mention to the Meatmen, cause I used to work for the bass player (long after they disbanded) at a tex-mex restaurant.

More currently, I'm consistently amazed by Mark Holcomb (Haunted Shores).

The only ones I know of who have done/are doing even okay for themselves are

Evaline (Used to be called Holiday ... with much different sounding music)
Better Left Unsaid (Just saw their video on Headbanger's Ball, that's kinda big, right?)
Return from Exile (I just saw their album in a Victory Records catalogue)
