Why can't the police or goverment do anything about this protest?

If the funeral or service is a private event, then the private parts cannot be invaded by outsiders. Part of the first amendment is freedom of association, and when one is having a private event (say, a church service), and if a hostile group wants to attend and protest (say, atheists who are militant), then the hostile group can be barred. One can choose who one will associate with... and one can choose, in private, to not be forced to associate with someone hostile.

I have taken part in protests of this sort. I normally show up with signs that make exactly the points brought up in this discussion. "Real Christians know the Bible is full of crap! Jesus was a liar! 'Love your neighbor as yourself' isn't true! Be cruel to suffering families!", and similar sentiments are great to put on signs, and since often the media is there, one can make the hateful points directly into the camera, so that good Christians watching are forced to confront the insult to Scripture being made by such people.

There's nothing like joining the opposition, and being hugely enthusiastic about embracing the clearly poor reasoning, to make a point. Those you've joined either have to attack your point (and thus abandon their stance), or look like imbeciles. They normally realise it partway through, but don't want to attack a core value behind their protest, and can't bar someone from joining their protest... which is the ultimate irony. *laugh*

And, one could also make a sign insulting Italians for warding off the evil eye by tossing up the horns, introduced to metal by Dio. "Italian grandmothers engage in Satanism!" Oh, my goodness... I can only imagine who that would rile up.

In fact, if there is anyone who makes it out there and manages to protest alongside the WC in this way, I'd love to see pictures. *laugh*

i'm going to laugh when we die, i totally anticipate this scenario:

suppose god's there and we all get judged ( I believe in god, bu don't believe in hell. if God loves us all, then he wouldn't condemn us, obviously, hence WBC aren't christians, they're a psychotic cult. i wouldn't serve any god that was that much of an asshole anyway.)

we ask god who stays and who goes to hell and he says

If it was at all possible I would love to turn up with lots of free minded people to verbally destroy them. At least we'd be there in the name of morality and not just trying to escape eternal torment - a selfish pursuit masked with salvation for sinners.

I could rant about this for ages but it would be ultimately pointless. There are better people at arguing the immorality and suffering caused in the name of religion - Christopher Hitchens. I challenge any Christian to open-mindedly read one of his books and still believe that Christianity is a force for what's good and what's true. It is NOT the compass or the basis for morality in this day.
