What is the function of this part in a studio monitor?

Hey,

I own a pair of KRK 5s and I was just curious, what is the reason behind having a hole right under the bass cone. Can anyone explain this to me please?
Is it better to have something like that on a studio monitor?

For those who don't know what it is and can't be bothered to read the whole article, it's called a "port"...

and in its most basic capacity allows air to be pushed out of the speaker.
