The 1st one is the one i use currently, the 2nd is the one i used to use but i'm thinking of going back to it. 3rd one i'm not sure about, i do like it but it's a bit weak, and the 4th i'm not sure.

At least as they are processed there, I like the first one. The fourth one isn't too bad either, though. It's a little closer to the kind of snare sound I tend to go for.

i think i liked the pop of the first one, the second sounded similar with less resonance and a slightly different pitch, but it would be my 2nd choice

yeah to make it fair i processed them, added the reverb, EQ'd them etc. Because some of them sound like dogshit as a raw sample, but amazing when they've been worked on

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of any of them, but that's just me - I like more crack and liveliness in my snare. Not that I have that in what I use (Alesis D4 samples), but before long I hope to be able to record samples from my kit! :D Of those you have, though, I think I like #3 the best, but it does need to be louder.

Here's what I use, in order of preference:

I like the first one, but cant call it without hearing it in a mix

Well yeah that's true, in a mix with heavy guitars etc you generally only hear the very top end 'snap', which is why i want to go back to the 2nd one i think. In a mix it's less 'obvious' but more present. The first one, although awesome by itself, is a bit gay in a mix. Dont know what it is exactly, there's just something about it that sounds a bit too grungey for my liking

It's next to impossible to judge snares based on a single hit with no musical context around it.

We're in the process of recording now, and we have about 7 or 8 snares in the studio. Metal rimmed, maple and birch, large snares, compact snares, even a piccolo snare. We did tests with them all before we laid down any drum tracks, and found they all had different character, and we're using that to our advantage, swapping in the right snare for each song. Some songs, our drummer even has two of them mounted, so he can use a second one as an accent.

Why use just one, when you can use them all?

True but whenever i mix these they sound like ass. I think perhaps the second one but i'm still not entirely convinced. I know what i'll do, make a short clip with a full mix, using both snares, THEN we can hear what's what!

*gets busy*

my vote for the 4th because from my experience it gives the most aggressive cold sound with loud distorted bass in the mix

ok i did a short clip for each of the first two, seeing as they're neck and neck (a great excuse to try out the Dimebag patch i created!)

#2. It's very similar in pitch, but it's got more 'air' around it, seems more live. Makes the rest of the music breathe more, IMO.

And I agree, great patch!! :metal:

It'd be a lot easier if we could hear it in a mix

edit: haha, just scrolled down. I think I liked #2 better in the mix
