Lately I've been listening to some old school shred music and rediscovering some music that inspired me back in the day. But I'm sure I'm overlooking some, so who are your favorite shredders and shred tunes?

Bonus imaginary e-peen points for posting video/clips!

I am a big fan of Ignazio Di Salvo. He is a very melodic player. I would not consider it heavy music, but it gets quite technical with some impressive 8 finger tapping combined with a very controlled and expressive vibrato. I just like his note choices, his music evokes feeling. As these things should.

There are a lot of more well known shredders that I love, but I chose to highlight a lesser known one rather than be one of 50 people that highlights how awesome Tosin Abasi, Petrucci, or Jason Richardson is.

My friend Taylor’s band Paladin has been getting some attention recently... he’s an absolutely amazing shredder.

my favorite song on there has to be Black Omen at 17:51.

My favorite shredders have always been Vinnie Moore, Paul Gilbert and Bruce Bouillet, and Tony MacAlpine. I had a lesson with Bruce at his house way back in 1990. That was pretty cool.

I’ll restrict myself to “new” names and not talk about Satriani, Vai, Skolnick, etc.

The shred players that I love all have great phrasing and a heavy sense of melody.

Established “modern” guitarists:

Per Nilsson

Paul Wardingham

Plini (not really shred IMO).

Up and coming players: Syndrone, Stephen Taranto.

If we include fusion, jazz and blues, then my list explodes.
