The more active pickups, the better.

Too bad there won't be an 8 string version. (I'm assuming. Would love to be wrong.)

Everyone uses EMGs to record their best music, then spend the next 20 years finding EMG alternatives and shaping them to sound more like EMG 81s

I’ve also just grown really cynical of the marketing and endorsement side of the music industry. It’s a little too convenient that so many bands with multiple guitarists all use different gear, almost as if they don’t want to cannibalize each others sales revenue.

Mite b cool, but Blackouts are also some of the worst pickups I’ve ever used so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't believe you. I have never heard of a band with three guitarists endorsed by three different guitar brands and three different pickup brands.

I've only tried 7 string blackouts and they were disgusting, and not in a good way. Sounds like this could be an improvement, but also probably chasing exactly what an EMG 81 would do out of the box... Really just seems like EMG doesn't pay as well as others on the endorsement front.

Just make the standard Blackout the Emty. Its the only good one imo besides the ridiculous AHB-2 but that only comes in 6 string afaik.
The phase 1 is just awful.

I feel like Emg 81 was the last pickup to come out that actually mattered.

Everything since then is just like yeah whatever. Slight variations that don't matter, often just making things slightly worse than what already exists.

I can't lie, sig pickups make me roll my eyes bigtime.

I was going to try to list a bunch of really great pickups I wouldn't want to live without that were released post-1981, but I could honestly live with the selection of Duncan JBs, DiMarzio Super Distortions, and EMG 81s

I do like stuff released since then like the Steve's Special and Evolutions, but overall just using 40+ year old pickups wouldn't be too bad. Wild to think the Super Distortion came out 3 years after Woodstock and it's still so viable.

It took like 20 years to develop an A5 pickup for 7-strings that doesn't sount like shit for metal (SD Pegasus). If I were to choose, I'd be happy with just that.

They didn’t exist yet.
He didn’t start until way after Shogun if memory serves.
Was just going by what Corey said in the video. But I see what you mean. Seems like 08 was the first year.

For whatever reason, both he and Matt seem to either have a lot of trouble remembering things about gear, or purposely obfuscate information. he must have meant he was using Seymour Duncan since ‘05 maybe? But I think their signature Deans had custom Dean USA pickups, so who knows.

He was using passives pretty exclusively for most of their early career. I’d have to double check if he was even using the Blackouts for In Waves.

I like to think I'm not generally forgetful with stuff like who's using what lol, I just let endorsement rage get the better of me and assumed a situation was the same as one I'd seen play out before (KSE, Devin Townsend switching to Fishman after 20 years)

Honestly, I’m a bit surprised he hadn’t jumped ship to Fishman along with Matt. SD must be keeping him happy though. Who knows, maybe these blackouts will be pretty good. I don’t think anyones really complained about Papa Loomis’s set as far as I know. I’d assume these are going to come from the same DNA.

I actually really wanted to try the Jeff Loomis Blackouts but of course pickups are rarer than platinum in Canada at the moment lol.
