Age? I had an eastman 335 and it was great but sounded so similar to my singlecuts that I turned it into my first PRS 594. Havent tried a 339 in a long time and the $3k used one sold.

Also yes, serious problem.

could be related to age? possibly. I am becoming more and more traditional as i'm aging.

and i think i'm sort of turning into a 'pokemon trainer' gotta catch em all.
so far, i've owned:
Strats
LPs
Vs
Explorer
semi-hollow type guitars
jazz body type guitars
acoustics
Tele (just now)

single coils, humbuckers, and P90's...

have owned a few floyd rose type guitars too...

headless seems to not interest me at the moment, but perhaps that may change later on...

and exactly as you and XZACX mentioned, from what i can see online, a lot of people are saying the same thing, that the 335s are very similar to LPs, so perhaps its just stupid gas...

For the record, 99% of the time forum purchases are “stupid GAS”. It happens.

Edit: finally got the goldtop back last week and didn't get around to posting here yet. Lots going on...

If you want an ES-style guitar I can't recommend this enough. Its one of my fav guitars I own. The specs are impeccable and the QC on it was flawless. I think I paid $600 new on sale? Ebony fretboard, TP6 bridge with finer tuners, pearloid block inlays, Grover tuners, double bound body, stereo output, varitone, and a case.

I had planned on swapping out the Epi Alnico Classic PRO stock pickups with Suhr Thornbuckers, but they sounded so good to my ears I've kept them.

The varitone is one of those things I don't think gets enough love because people don't really mess with it enough to "get it". They flick through the settings keeping everything else the same and just go meh and put it back on full. But if you crank the amp gain and volume... and then play with the varitone, guitar volume, and pickup selector, there are a ton of usable tones in there. There's one that is almost a subtle Hendrix octave tone that's killer for lead. There's another that (combined with the already mid-heavy pickups) really cuts through a mix. There's another than will instantly give you a southern rock (or Hot for Teacher type tone) even though your amp is dimed. Basically, it's like having instant gain/vol/tone presets on your guitar if you use it right.

And because there are no F-holes you don't get the usual ES feedback at higher volumes/gain, which works great for Mammoth WVH type rock.

@soliloquy there's also a red Gibby Lucille at spaceman ottawa for what may be a reasonable price (I don't know new cost). They had a black one last year too.

If I can sneak out I may hit up a store near my friends to try their 335 selection. My local store has 2.

nah, for the time being, i'll let the 335 gas just sit unattended.

but also, where abouts do you live? I could have sworn at one point you were in London (the boring one, no offence to London Ontario), Barrie, Toronto, and now...Ottawa?

Never lived in ottawa but have family and friends there. Took info off all profiles after some weirdo PM’d me saying he knew where I lived and who my family members were. I check Canada wide for gear though, got someone everywhere.

The old version was so much better to me with EMGs and short scale.

I really think this thread should be renamed into the 'Gibson Thread'. Just my opinion, but think Gibson deserves its own thread. I mean, we have a carvin/kiesel thread that has over 300 pages (sure, it also has 10 years on this thread), but i'm pretty sure people have more gibson related discussions than kiesel/carvin.

Question for you Les Paul owners:

I'm deeply in love with the tuning of my 7-string (and 8-string), which are both a half step down from standard. But I'm a kid of the 90s and I'll forever love the sight of a beat down Gibson Les Paul forever. So...
What is the lowest tuning you guys run your Les Pauls at and with what string gauge while still being practical in terms of tuning stability and definition?
Did you ever go to A#/Bb on the lowest string (so A#-standard)?

Thanks in advance, L

I’m running a “loose goose” in B standard with 12-54. My tech suggested 13-56 but I’ve changed up my playing style to make the 12-54 work.

You can run Bb standard, 13-56 or 12-60 would do it

Hey all, just need some advise from the LP folks about MIJ Les Paul Customs...

I'm in the market for a MIJ LPC, and have shortlisted these 3:

1) Crews Maniac Sound 2016 LPC; local to me, and looks to me like a quality built with ebony board etc.

2) Orville by Gibson 1988 LPC; love the vintage vibe, and probably the closet spec to original Gibson. But will be riskier as with all vintage instruments.

3) Bacchus 2014 BLP-CTM; love the overall look and specs of this, but not my preferred finish at this point.

All around the same price range; could probably negotiate more on Crews / Bacchus.

Anyone here had any experience with these and their quality?

Thanks!

To me, contrasting pickups and knobs are a big part of why I love the Les Paul look so much. I could live with the headstock, but I’d make some cosmetic hardware changes.

Orvilles are aging at this point, and most would have a rosewood board and plastic inlay (the LPC57B or whatever it was called did have an Ebony board but still plastic inlay). It could be a great player but with age, there's a chance it'll need some fretwork just do to time.

I don't know much about Bacchus. The current Momose stuff is supposed to be nice, but that might be up a tier in the Deviser pyramid, so I'm not sure if a Bacchus is more on par with an Edwards type guitar?

Crews are suppose to be very nice, but there are multiple tiers and it's hard for me to tell what is what. The spec sheet should tell you whether it's Honduran mahogany or African etc. They don't do the fret end binding, but otherwise the quality looks great from pics ive seem. If it's local to you, id check it out and go for that if you like it.

Resale on a Crews and Bacchus might be rough since they are not well known brands.
