I think the only ones that really stuck with me this year were:
Hellripper - Warlocks Grim and Withered Hags
The Arcane Order - Distortions From Cosmonogy
I went from .56 to a .70, and it feels great for that low A on a regular 25.5" scale.
Trying to learn Cast Down The Heretic at the moment, but it's always a PITA to learn Nile by ear. And a lot of the tabs online are mostly wrong.
Went to see Psycroptic on the Tech Trek tour last week. They are always great, and I was pleasantly surprised by Benighted, awesome energy.
Saw Joe Satriani couple of days ago as well, really cool gig. Could've had less extended solos and more songs, but oh well.
And last but certainly not...
I would recommend learning the songs by ear. They stick so much better than when learning from tabs. Playing along with backing tracks or the recordings is all good, but if you really want to learn and memorize the songs, put the tabs away. In my experience, of course.
Psycroptic - Observant.
It's all downpicked, except for the 16th notes obviously. And yes, the song is in 250 bpm, so you kinda have to start slow, unless you're already a downpicking god.
Man, I don't get it. I can sort of dig the rhythm (not really but sort of), but I'm just sat there waiting for something to happen. Vai is cool, but even his part was pretty tame.
