What bands did you see live recently / are waiting to see?

Saw Finntroll and Blind Guardian recently, both were great. Seeing Vader and Hellripper soon-ish, Opeth in June, and Mr. Big late summer.

It's the annual "What gear came in and what gear went" thread... 2023!

A Vigier GV Wood came in, but was swapped for an Ibanez PIA in Blue Powder shortly after. Another quiet year.

Your album of 2023 (thus far)

I think the only ones that really stuck with me this year were: Hellripper - Warlocks Grim and Withered Hags The Arcane Order - Distortions From Cosmonogy

Nile- Defiling the Gates of Ishtar cover (KxK Warrior 7)

I went from .56 to a .70, and it feels great for that low A on a regular 25.5" scale. Trying to learn Cast Down The Heretic at the moment, but it's always a PITA to learn Nile by ear. And a lot of the tabs online are mostly wrong.

Nile- Defiling the Gates of Ishtar cover (KxK Warrior 7)

Nice! Was super stoked to see them play this song live on the current tour.

What bands did you see live recently / are waiting to see?

Went to see Psycroptic on the Tech Trek tour last week. They are always great, and I was pleasantly surprised by Benighted, awesome energy. Saw Joe Satriani couple of days ago as well, really cool gig. Could've had less extended solos and more songs, but oh well. And last but certainly not...

Should I memorize songs to the point where I can play them without relying on tabs/backing track?

I would recommend learning the songs by ear. They stick so much better than when learning from tabs. Playing along with backing tracks or the recordings is all good, but if you really want to learn and memorize the songs, put the tabs away. In my experience, of course.

Songs thats great for practicing Downpickin?

Psycroptic - Observant. It's all downpicked, except for the 16th notes obviously. And yes, the song is in 250 bpm, so you kinda have to start slow, unless you're already a downpicking god.

    Polyphia with Vai

Sure why not, rapping and breakdowns, the great fail-saves of songwriting.

    Polyphia with Vai

Man, I don't get it. I can sort of dig the rhythm (not really but sort of), but I'm just sat there waiting for something to happen. Vai is cool, but even his part was pretty tame.

    7 strings string gauges

Nothing wrong with that, I take a regular set plus a 070 for the low A.

    NGD: Bastard Xiphos-RG

Thanks! Yeah I'm pretty happy with it. It's getting difficult to find something else that I truly want, especially at the current prices

    NGD: Bastard Xiphos-RG

Thanks! Yeah I was very pleasantly surprised by his work, also came with cavity covers. It's also a super comfortable body shape, well balanced.

Yeah I might do something like that! Or even just a blower switch, like the GG Suhr had, if I can figure out the wiring.
