If you're looking for over the top distortion you should try the DeathMetalPedal. I stumbled upon your powerball problem so i thought i'd leave this message.

I usually use the POD X3 Live with (currently) a Spider III 120. I connect the DeathMetal before the POD and let it flow through a clean-patch (exactly how you would do it on an amp).
Every bigger music store should have one around to try... and it works with also just with the amp on a clean channel
