    I like DR Low Riders, but as it's been stated it all depends on what you're going for. Are you using the same EQ settings with every new set of strings or and you playing around with it after you've changed them?

    I own a 5 string Phoenix and I love it. I don't think the larger bridge really effects the sustain as much as it's advertised to, but it looks cool and overall it plays/sounds great.

    I'm fairly certain my bridge and top nut are both plastic, so replacing them is defiantly on the list. I see what you're saying about fixing the dead spots that way, but I'm mostly interested in playing mad scientist on my cheep guitar for now.
