Is 40w amp enough for small shows?

I had the same feelings about modelers (currently Neural DSP Quad Cortex) and FRFR amps to begin with, but I got used this kind of rig eventually and now appreciate what I'm hearing. I needed to rewire my head to hear not the boomy loud-as-hell kick-you-in-the-gut thump of a 4x12 getting all of...

Best resource for learning to properly set up guitars

I've been doing my own thing when it comes to setting up guitars for years and now it's time for me to learn how to do it by the book. While I'm sure there are a thousand videos on YouTube on the subject, I'd love to have some input on which ones in your opinions are the best (something Google...

Best DiMarzio option for a Fluence Guy

Depending on which models we're talking about, would there be any $$$ advantage to just getting the OEM pickups replaced with the Fluences? For me, getting the Standard 6 and planning a pickup swap got me exactly the guitar I wanted with a few extra bucks in my pocket.

Best DiMarzio option for a Fluence Guy

For what it's worth, I decided to go with a D-Activator from banjomikez. Thanks to everyone for helping me think this through to what I really needed to decide, which was flat-ish EQ vs scooped, etc.

Best DiMarzio option for a Fluence Guy

Good to know about banjomikez; I'd seen his listings.

Best DiMarzio option for a Fluence Guy

I'd second that the Strandberg OEM pickups are surprisingly - uninspiring? Disappointing! - for a guitar that's otherwise built from fairly high end components. I actually decided to get the standard 6 to save a few bucks with the plan to swap pickups immediately. I'm glad I went that way.

Best DiMarzio option for a Fluence Guy

I'm still trying to keep the guitar stock-looking, so I'm trying to find a 7 string D-Activator in white with black pole pieces. The closest I've come is white with gold. I'm near Phoenix. With my schedule I'm probably best off just ordering from DiMarzio...

Best DiMarzio option for a Fluence Guy

Evolutions are certainly an interesting option. Do they stay tight for low, chunky rhythm? I have a Jem with them but it's only 6 string of course. (Black Winters are a bit of a genius idea since Duncan will swap them if they don't work out.) - Thanks!

Best DiMarzio option for a Fluence Guy

I've found the D-Activator to be a little bland and sterile - which to be fair is the biggest criticism I see of active pickups anyway, so they must be doing something right. Honestly I probably would have pulled the trigger on one by now if I'd run into one in white with black pole pieces. The...

Best DiMarzio option for a Fluence Guy

This might actually make for some useful info for someone browsing this thread at some point. Both guitars came with Fusion Edge pups. When I put in the Moderns in the RGXL I had to have the pickup cavities routed deeper, which is a capability I don't have on my own. I would expect the same...

Best DiMarzio option for a Fluence Guy

I'm looking for a quick and easy swap for the bridge in my 26.5" 7 string RGD, tuned down 1 step. I have the Fluence Modern set in my RGXL and it's perfect for me. The RGD is a backup for the RGXL, so the ideal pickup will sound good without much tweaking on the fly. Ideally it would be a...

Make this travel 7 strings multiscale lighter

Basswood is a good choice for a light wood that still retains good tonal characteristics. Strandberg uses it for at least some of their non-chambered models, for example.

    Are guitar picks overlooked?

I used red Jazz IIIs for years but finally got tied of what felt like too much clicky attack, so a couple of years ago I bought a variety of picks and had a shoot-out over a period of a few months. I landed on the red Dunlop Stubby picks for recording and more technical playing as the shape...

    Problems with band member

I'm liking the idea of having a different singer just for vaccinated-only gigs (for now). What a great opportunity to make a relatively painless transition - it's a great opportunity to train up someone good but a little green if needed. Having a non-threatening way to keep multiple singers on...

    Problems with band member

A few thoughts from someone that's worked with more than a few female vocalists: if you're working with an agent and they are aware that she's problematic, you may already be losing gigs because you aren't getting calls first. They don't want to stake their reputations on a vocalist with...

Pickup Suggestions for RG2027XL similar to Fluence Modern Ceramic without routing

No, I haven't tried. I had thought -wrongly- that they were the size of EMG 707s but it might be that the mounting tabs might be all that's stopping me from using the Fluence Moderns; that shouldn't be hard to fix. I put out feelers to a dealer about this - I have to think someone here must have...

Pickup Suggestions for RG2027XL similar to Fluence Modern Ceramic without routing

For my RG2027XL, I'm looking a new set of pickups as similar as possible to the Fishman Fluence Modern Ceramic set, which of course won't fit without routing. I'd grab these without hesitation if they did; this sound is exactly what I'm looking for. Any suggestions? There aren't many options...
