Well I like to see that people's opinions are pretty diversified. I am not quite surprised though as tastes are subjectives and music makes no exception to this rule.
Again, what I find pretty funny is that a luthier builds what his client asks him to and not the contrary. So in regards to the 8 string posted in the OP the actual client (Simon Girard from Beyond Creation) wanted his guitar to look like this and he carefully chose the specs of it.
To some guitars might look busy while their own guitars will look too simple for others.
The man is a bass player himself and he tried out for my band a few weeks ago at a rehearsal. I had the chance to play on one of his first custom 6 string bass. Only thing I can tell you is that it actually looked way simpler and played like a dream. Everything was so smooth on it.
So, are you faulting his other customers for wanting builds like that... or faulting him for accommodating customers who wanted builds like that?
In other words, if he was willing to build something more to your tastes, does it matter if the other customers wanted busier combinations when you can get something simpler? Or is his being accommodating a reason to rule him out because he will accommodate you too?
