Decent bare-bones tablet these days?

We have a first gen ipad mini that's probably due to retire. Uses include email, candy crush, and photo storage. Since it doesn't have to be fancy/handle a ton, what's a solid bet these days? Thanks!

Stick with Apple, they're more expensive but just about everything else out there much cheaper is practically disposable. Buy once, cry once.

I'd either get the iPad air if you're someone who wants a modern design or the regular iPad for $300...
