I have a pedalboard with a Boss ES-5 and a Strymon Iridium, that I’m really happy with for clean to low/medium gain stuff. I only play at home and run it through headphones, desktop speakers and my Powercab+.
I then got an Amptweaker Tightmetal JR and paired it up with my C.A.B. M hoping that would cover my high gain needs. I used to own a Mooer Preamp Live and was actually pretty happy with it. I hated the build in power amp sims and instead used the C.A.B. M for that purpose. But even with the new C.A.B. PLUS (beta) I’m just not as happy with the sound I’m getting from the Tightmetal. I have a hard time controlling the noise and there is just way too much low end. I can to some degree control the noise and dial out the low end with the EQ/power amp/enhancer and noise gate in the C.A.B M, but I’m just not that happy with the tones I’m getting.
I was originally planning on buying the Tightmetal Pro II, but got tired of waiting and got the JR instead. The TM Pro II is still not out, I don’t really want to spend more time and money on getting the Depth Finder and maybe a different overdrive/boost pedal (I’m using an EQD Dunes at the moment) to try and get the sound I want, so … I have now put the TM JR and C.A.B. M up for sale.
The plan is to replace them with a multi amp/effects board for my metal needs. If I can also use it for other stuff then great, but since I already have that covered, the main focus is clean and high gain. I already have a bunch of IR’s that I love, so build in cab sims are not that important.
The amp/power amp sims (and build in noise gates)will have to be good though and the effects will have to be at least OK. I’ve never been a fan of the high gain tones from the Helix (so I’m not interested in the Pod GO) and I don’t really want to spend too much money on this, since it’s not my main setup. Hardware solutions only, so also no plugins or other stuff where I have to use my computer.
Right now I’m looking at the Mooer GE250 and the Hotone Ampero, but I can’t decide which one to get. I’ve listened to a lot of Youtube clips and they both sound great with 3rd party IRs. The Ampero doesn’t have midi out, so I can’t control my Powercab with it, but since I will probably have it on the FRFR setting for 4x12 cab sounds most of the time, I guess it’s not a dealbreaker. The GE250 has an fx loop, but if it adds as much latency as the one on the Preamp Live, I won’t use it anyway. Also the plan is to use it as a standalone unit.
Any advice is appreciated, thanks!
