Hey folks, did a little search but found nothing I felt was conclusive. Hoping your up-to-the-minute experiential knowledge of studio headphones will help me make a choice on a pair. I've never owned anything decent, but the noise of monitoring with speakers is driving the missus nuts when she's home...

Here's a few pairs I found from various recommendations. Hoping you guys and girls might be able to help me decide on a pair. They're a combination of open and closed back designs.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Pro Studio Monitor Headphones Addicted to Audio

Sennheiser HD25-II Professional Monitoring Headphones Addicted to Audio

Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro Reference Headphones Addicted to Audio

Sennheiser HD 380 PRO Headphones | Buy Online

Happy to spend up to $300AUS on a pair if the belief is that they're worth that much more... but if the gains aren't there, I'll probably settle on one of the cheaper sets.

Your help is appreciated!

Superlux make near identical beyerdynamic clones that you can get for well under a hundred dollars, great sounding headphones.

I love my M50's, they have great bass response which makes them great for balancing the low end of a mix if you have a dud room for monitoring something like that with speakers.

They have a slightly funny high end out of the box, but as I burn mine in I am noticing they just get better and the high end is fine now.

If you have any questions about them feel free to PM me :yesway:

i dont like headphones, so i just built a 2 inch raised floor, filled with egg crate foam, the did the same on the walls, put plywood padding and carpet down on the floor, and then carpet padding followed by sheet rock on the walls, and more egg foam over that. im on the top floor of my house so i just nailed egg crate foam to my ceiling, and since i had all i needed laying in the garage it cost me nothing, and i can even track at a comfortable lvl in the AM. and i can blast music through my stereo and eveyone else barely hears a thing, and trust me...it feels weird and kinda cool being to inches closer to the ceiling...just dont forget you have a ceiling fan like i did...im 6'6" so i constantly bash it with my forehead now

OH YA, i can also watch porn without the volume muted and no one knows a thing xD (thats the best part)(better than headphones cause you can hear people grab your door giving you that extra half second of warning before you actually see movement

all you need to do to do this is go get a shitload of foam from a dumpster behind a matress store, some carpet/padding, a bunch of 2x2's (i used bout 20 7[ish] foot sections) and some sheetrock..even if you dont have any of it shouldnt cost more than a couple hundred bucks to do (i.e. the PRICE of good quality monitor headphones)...and then you can monitor without headphones, without bothering the misses....FUCK i hate headphones xD

I love my pair of Sennheiser HD595's. They're insane for the price I picked them up on amazon - $120. Highly recommended.
