wow this is an old thread!

ok, forgive my late answer, but the settings were POD x3 / line6 modern high gain into the treadplate cab into voxengo curve eq with a preset ripped directly from the unnacompianed guitar parts from the black album!! i quadtracked too as they did on the Black album.

oh and countless re-takes to get it close to Hetfields tight as feck playing!!

I always just assumed it's high gain and scooped mids but you certainly nailed that shit, good job man

no emg's - just my Dimarzio PAF pro's on my Ibanez PGM 301 , the curve EQ and the tightness of the playing is the key to this I think.
