No one ever told me the consequences of filing down frets. From what sounds, it should never be done at all.
Is there anything permanent you can put on your frets that'll work if you filed them down too low?

They end up filed down. I went through something similar when I first spent money.

Basically have them dressed correctly with the neck straight at the factory. Get stainless steel. You can put a slight bit of relief in the neck. Very slight. Like and eighth of a turn. And you'd be surprised at what steel wool will do 0000 grade. You really need to put a notched straight edge on the neck and get that correct. Then put the other side on it and see which frets are higher.
You might only need to tap a couple down or pull a couple and then put in the same gauge fret wire.
But no once they're gone they're gone. Gotta put new wire on.
You know there's a fret shaping tool that would help too. Look into some videos on that. Frets start to flatten out over the years. They need re-crowning to get the intonation back.

Of course not, and we all learn by doing mistakes. But there is also a bit of Common Sense. You dont expect to keep eating a bar of chocolate and it never finishes do you? Same with filling down frets, since you are removing Material from it its more than Logic that it will... well..have less Material, right?
So now that you learned that that filling down frets (without knowing how to do it) will cost you, since you need to have it properly fixed by someone that knows how to do those things, and no... there's nothing you can do to "add material" to it, dont waste your time and energy trying to do it because it will never work you risk screwing even more, that leads to spend even more money fixing more things... take it to a Pro and let him fix it.
