Hi There,

I'm mixing my band's first album and would appreciate any feedback. Any critiques on the composition are greatly appreciated, as well.

Arcardian

Gear and plugs I'm using include: logic pro x, fab filter Q2, C2, L, MB, Timeless 2, and Saturn. Trilian for bass, SD2 with metal machine and avatar kit for drums, and Axefx II for guitars.

Thank you for taking the time to listen!

Overall I like the sound, though sometimes I feel like there is too much "noise" (ear fatigue) and it is difficult to understand what's going on (especially at the beginning of the song).

Nice sound, not my style at all, which may be reflected in my feedback:

1) the snare is pretty loud in the mix so maybe turn it down a bit. Also I think the snare lacks highend. It is very midrangy and punchy, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but I think the tone could be a bit more rounded.

2) I guess you have highpassed the cymbals pretty aggresively? I would like them to have a bit more "body" <- yes it is a pretty vauge thing to say, but a little more midrange, so basicly lower the frequency on the highpass filter. Maybe you also want to have a subtle low-pass filter on them as they tend to sound a bit harsh to me.

3) EAR FATIGUE! everything sounds very "in-you-face", which again is not necessarily a bad thing, but I think it is a bit to much, which makes it unpleasant to listen too for longer times. How much comp do you do on each track?

4) Musically: In my world the "drummer" should be on the hi-hat or ride cymbal most of the time, using things like the crash mainly for fills and effects. I think playing the crash as a ride is kinda "too much" especially with the somewhat harsh cymbal sound.

5) The keyboard that enters at 3:30 seems a bit odd, and doesn't really fit in, imo.

Again, it sounds nice, not bad at all, this is just what my thoughts :)

Unfortunate trend on every metal mix on these days. That's why I only find pre-2000 records on my music library. Today everything is overcompressed, all guitars sound the same. Why spend time carefully choosing between mahogany/alder, or DiMarzio/Seymour, when in the end everything will have over-the-top compression and only noise will be heard?

Please don't follow this trend. Make some airy mix, like what producers did in the beginnings of the 1990's.

Thank you for the critiques man. It sounds like I need to high cut the cymbals and guitars more to reduce the ear fatigue. I appreciate the comment about the keyboard, I think it sounds pretty cool, but I may be too invested in the song to objectively tell if it doesn't work.
