Looking for headphones for use with AxeFX

Never bought studio headphones before - what are some top contenders for a good set?

I use my wifes' Bose set (no idea what model) for listening. I'll be buying Beyerdynamic 770 Pros for mixing.

A good decision. Are they for casual playback, or do you plan to do any mixing with them too?

DT770’s are probably the best value for quality at a certain price. I’d definitely recommend them if you want closed back cans. If you want a bit truer sound, and don’t mind bleed, then the 880 and 990 are a bit flatter in the low end (the bass can escape). If you plan on tracking at all then get the closed 770’s. Beyerdynamic drivers have nice clarity in the upper mids/treble. I have Beyerdynamic T1’s that are phenomenal, but my 770’s are outstanding for a fraction of the price, and a set that I rely on daily.

Having done research on mixing headphones, 770/880/990s, seinheiser (sp) 600s and audio technica M50 and M40 are solid.

So, are the DT770s better than AT 50s ? And, which version of the 770s should I be looking at - 80 ohms or 240 Ohms ?

I use M40s for my modelers/plugins. Very good for the price, and no amplifier needed. I switched the pads to bigger ones that added a lot more space (and comfort — the stock pads are painful on my head) which I found sounded a lot better with some EQ to make up for the change in sound.
