hhnice!
Disclaimer: I did not build this, this was built for me by my brother-in-law. He is happy for me to post this here.
Hey folks,
First, pictures!
A little bit of background info:
My brother-in-law completed a course at Crimson Guitars and has built a couple of guitars and a bass before then. His latest project was to build two semi-hollow superstrats side by side. One of which he gifted to me. There were a few things in this project he hadn't done/worked with before such as the trem and semi-hollow cavity, so some of this was trial and error. I chose the pickups, top and the fretboard.
Specs:
Swamp ash body
Quilted maple top
Limba/Wenge 3 piece neck
Birdseye maple headstock and fretboard
25.75" scale length
16" Radius
Wilkinson wvp trem bridge
Axesrus aluminium locking tuners
Tusq nut
SD Saturday Night Special Bridge
SD Classic Stack Neck/Middle
9-48 Winspear Strings (Drop D)
Verdict:
Obviously I'm a little biased as he is my brother in law, so take my opinion with a pinch of salt.
This guitar is interesting for a number of reasons. First to note is it's pretty small! The bridge was put quite far down the body and as a result, the neck is a bit shorter. It's smaller than my PRS Custom 24. Because of the bridge position, it reminds me of playing my old SE Baritone. Although on my left hand it still feels like a regular scale. The design itself is very Mayones-esque, especially the Regius carve neckheel. The neck profile is an asymmetrical design similar to a tear drop, I'm not really that fussy over neck profiles myself but this one is pretty comfortable. The bridge is pretty comfy and returns to pitch fairly well. I chose these pickups as I was after something a little less metal and a little more rock/blues. Obviously they do that very well but I am surprised at how aggressive the SNS bridge can be! Under the right settings it sounds mean as hell.
The only thing design wise that I'd call out is the back plates. I can't remember specifically what the issue was but I believe he ran out of wood to reattempt them so they've been left as is. It bothers him a lot more than it bothers me. Also it's missing strap pins and a truss rod cover for now, but those are being worked on. Overall, I'm very impressed with his work. I know he's interested in creating a brand and he has a few more designs in the works. I've started designing a 7 string with him and I'm stoked already on what he's shown me.
So what do you guys think? He is a lurker on this forum so feel free to praise/criticise!
Bonus pic!:
That's his guitar. If anyone is interested in any pics during the build process let me know, I'm sure I can get some off him.
