Been rejigging my guitars for the bands I'm in, and got some classics in. Sold a bunch to afford these new guitars.
2. Charvel Pro-Mod DK24 Shell Pink - Was planning on using this as a live guitar for overseas shows but ended up moving to bass guitar... so I didn't need it anymore!
3. (Still to sell) LTD SC-608B - This daft 8 string is cool, but I hate heavy guitars and this guitar weighs a ton. The Fishmans are hot, but I feel indifferent about it. In principle, it's a nice guitar but I don't actually use the 8th string much. I thought I'd learn some Meshuggah songs but turns out, I couldn't be arsed.
This was a bit of a random purchase - I found it B stock online down to £1074. I did some research, and it looked like a solid 7 string with 27". I don't mind baritone guitars, as my other 7's are 27-25.5 and 26.5-25.5. The 8 string is also 27". In my mind, swapping the LTD SC-608B for the Ibanez RG2027XL seemed like a comfortable fit. I used to have a RG1527 and a RG7621 years ago, and they were solid guitars. I wanted something that I could take on the road that wasn't a custom.
It had a few chips and scratches (pretty brutal B stock!) but it plays like butter. I put on thicker strings, a Tremol-no and noiseless springs. It shreds.
Then with the strap, restring and no trem bar...
I recently picked up a Jackson KE-3 for a band I was playing in. It sounds good, but playing it isn't as comfortable as other guitars. The Kelly shape is cool, but a pain in the butt to haul in the car. I've had a RG550EX and a RG770DX in the past, and they were awesome. I sold them yonks ago, and I craved the classic RG550 back. The new Genesis are pretty well priced and built like a tank. I managed to get this one brand new for £780ish, and it's exactly as you expect - a ripper and solid. The pickups are the usual generic affair, but for now, it'll do. I stuck heavier strings and noiseless springs on it, then set it up in C# standard. The whammy is staying on for this.
I learnt a few lessons last year playing shows abroad - taking super sick custom or rare guitars on flights is the danger zone as the guitar may get murdered by flight attendants or random events. I'm trying to curtail taking the good stuff and using more off the shelf gear if possible. These guitars are real good though, and selling a bunch of guitars that are nice but I don't actually use, feels pretty good.
