These guitars are awesome. The blue one is dark asiatic blue and very hard to find, as you can see it needs quite a bit of work. But it has been a fun project so far. The jewel blue one is more purple than anything, but both play really good and sound great.

The fingerboard is the dirtiest one I have ever owned, the frets aren't much better. But it is showing tons of promise as the work continues.

Rosewood looking a big pale here, but it turned a really nice shade once I cleaned it and oiled it up.

The teal one is sick, but I've always loved jewel blue. My first Ibanez of any kind was an SR400 in that color. I played the hell out of that thing! I agree it looks more purple in person. I'll either get another one of those basses or track down a Saber of some kind in that color.

Either can be had for a great price, and both body shapes look great in almost any color. I can let you know if I come across another one for a good price.

Damn who would treat an S540 like that? Goop? Slime? Thrown in the ocean??

Glad it has a new home where it can be treated like an instrument

Nice guitars! I just had a lower range S7320 long time ago, but it was fun to play :) Very dark and deep sound, super slim body.

Awesome finds, always love the curves on the S series.

Still thinking about selling my mint 1993 S540LTD in jewel blue. It's been in the case for 2+ years.

I don't agree, why do you say so?
It just looks right. Plus the S and RG were the two main Ibanez guitars for years. They changed the S to 24 frets and the model has been quietly downgraded and disappearing ever since.

I have one of the first models with 24 frets, they did something wrong with the s5470 to make the fretboard seem dead above the 12th fret. Good thing I play with enough gain that it's not an issue most of the time.

That seems coincidental only, Ibanez has been disinvesting in this series from early/mid 2000s. I'd say it was an attempt to boost its appealing to generic players. The big problem is that most of the Ibanez artists use RG type guitars...

I have an S540 (22 frets), an S2120XAV (22 frets) and an S5527 (24 frets, 7 strings). I don't feel it that way.

Dead notes may be to uneven frets. Maybe you could try a professional fret leveling and setup?

It's a known issue with the 2008 and maybe 2009 s5470 models, sustain on higher frets just doesn't exist. In 2010, they switched to a different neck and probably neck pocket.

Didn't the 24 frets Sabers begun only by 2010? or was it earlier?

Nevertheless, the problem you describe should be solved with a fret leveling... right?
