I bought an RGD421 off of eBay recently, sight unseen. Just rocked up to his door, had a quick look and gave him the cash, having already won the auction.
It wasn't as great as it looked in the auction photos... surprise! Anyway, the owner had 'fauxed' up the thing with white tape around the body and black dye on the fretboard. The fretboard in particular looked half baked and crap. Plus, the satin black finish on the body was irregularly worn and covered in patches of light scratches.
So, having played it for a couple of days, I decided to pull it down and get the body repainted. I also rubbed off as much of the black dye as possible, and that nasty faux binding.
Here's the results. Smith Concepts in Brookvale painted it for me in House of Kolor Kandy red over a silver base with fine metal flake in the candy:
Here's what's left of the black dye treatment. I re-oiled the board and polished the frets at the same time. Sanded the back of the neck a little, too. Plays very nicely now.
Here it is with its older glittery brother, by all-time fave RGA121.
