I know this forum is real old but how did you go about de-finishing the neck?

no problem.

i did the neck the same way as the body, with sand paper. i used a small orbital sander. i also have a very small mouse sander.

i only used those to get the top layers off though. the rest was done by hand. use a thick glove and get a good grip on the sand paper. i've done several guitars, so i can tell you that it will get easier over time once you get the hang of it.
