So I bought a 5150 combo. I love the gain from these amps. However I'm not a fan at all of the Sheffield 1200 speakers. Actually they are not bad, I just always have preferred the V30's especially for recording.

Stuck in two V30's, new JJ tubes from Bob at euro tubes and gave all the switches, pots, contacts a good clean. It needed a clean

Anyways here is some photos for anyone who's interested :)

Yeah I jumped on it when I found it. Gave the serial number to Peavey and they told me it left the factory in 94.
Super happy with how it sounds. Just need to break in the speakers now

Yeah man that thing looks nice!! I was offered a trade awhile back for one that was beat to shit (after he told me it was in decent condition). Refreshing to see a nice looking example like this - looks new!

have the same amp (6505 year 2004) and it is by far my favorite amp ever. I sometimes disconnect the speakers and run it thru my marshall 4x12 cab with awesome results. How did the v30's improved the tone, was thinking of doing the same mod or convert it into a head, that thing is a pain to carry up and down the stairs.

To me the V30's reveals the aggression in your playing while the Sheffield 1200's have an aggressive sound but don't necessarily enhance it in your style.
A simple example was with the palm mutting and lower tunings.
The V30's brings out the growl from the mutes and with their midrange really help and complement the 5150/6505 when tuning low.

The Sheffields did sound fuller on the low end but sounded to me more Hi/Fi (strong bass & treble but no midrange) but lacking the detail that I like. Palm mutes sounded full but had no detail or growl. First glance of the Sheffields showed impressive large sounding speakers but in a mix context or playing with a full band I can easily see the guitars getting lost.
The V30's in a quick comparison might sound weaker/harsher but when all the other band members start playing you'll love the added detail and midrange.
Obviously different setting are needed on the amp to get the best from the speaker.

All in all this is only my opinion with these speakers in this cab

Ahhh the fond memories you brought back. I had one of these back in the 90s...they were a MONSTER. But they were so heavy that there were numerous occasions I thought the handle was going to break and I would be watching it tumble down a set of stairs.
Glad that the overhaul worked really well....you did get yourself a unit in really great condition. I would love to hear it in action. Would you do that?

It's not funny how much these things weigh. Thank feck that someone before me installed handles on the side so two people can carry it. The wheels help tremendously

I'm finishing off my re-amping rig but once it's done there WILL be examples :)
