"upstairs" gigs also sounds like a euro thing.
I wonder if it's also a Canadian thing, 'cause I've seen plenty of double-venues over here where there's a "good bar" and a "not as good bar" on separate floors, where the quality / kind of act dictates if you're playing upstairs or downstairs.

I don't know if it's all still set up the same way, but in Milwaukee, there was in one building:
The Rave (ground floor)
The Rave Bar (ground floor)
The Eagles Ballroom (2nd floor)
The Basement/Rave Underground (below ground level)

And I've been there while there were multiple shows going on at the same time. Not sure if they ever did all 4, but for sure I've been there when there was two. I was seeing Orgy in The Rave part, and there was some pop show in The Eagles Ballroom upstairs. I remember that, because the dichotomy of personalities in the central lobby area where there was some crossover was hilarious to see.

edit: OK, it turns out I was remembering it wrong...It was 1999, and I was there to see Mr. Bungle and Dillinger Escape Plan in the basement, and at the same night, the other show was Orgy, Videodrone, and Dope. I remember people in the lobby shouting "OR-GEE" (with a hard "G") in an annoying voice up to people waiting on the stairs going upstairs to The Eagles for the Orgy show. 😅 I was misremembering it as a pop show, because of the amount of hair product and makeup worn by the concert goers. 😅

True, I've played a few of those here in the US although they're usually more like "good venue" on the ground floor, "not as good bar" in the basement. So more like "downstairs" gigs.

But I hear "upstairs" gig and i think of the Beatles rooftop concert. Or i guess maybe the Be Sharps on the roof of Moe's Tavern.

Modern day property barons tend to make very good use of their business space, often resulting in splitting levels between businesses. Typically it's most sensical to either run one of those businesses where logistics are light, such as a barbershop, and one of those businesses which requires deliveries/logistical access for products/materials such as a bar. Other times it's most sensical to run two businesses which require the same products/materials for operation for the same reason. Two crappy bars make more money than one crappy bar with a stage upstairs/downstairs, but frequently for live music events they effectively become the same business.

This results in what I call "upper-decker gigs". Often with managers power tripping all over each other, zero load in accomodation, an electrical system that can hardly keep up with more than a few lights, and staff who make more money selling drugs and do so. YMMV, but they're about the shittiest shows next to the shoestring, wanna-be promoter, gigs thrown by some of the most disgusting things to ever escape a birth canal.

Being in a cover band for 10 years I've definitely played my share of "upstairs" gigs or just ridiculous load ins in general. One club had the stage on the 2nd floor but we had to load in outside up a very narrow fire escape stair setup and we usually played there in the winter. I remember one time it was covered in snow and ice. Not fun.

Plenty of weddings and private events can have weird load ins too. Sometime you get lucky and have a freight elevator at your disposal. One event we played we had to load in where all the dumpsters were (smelled like absolute shit). Then take a freight elevator up 2 floors. Then walk through a long hallway to a normal elevator and take it down 1 floor (which made no sense). Then walk through a maze of hallways and through a working kitchen (hot as balls), then into the ballroom where we setup. Horrible.

Also some casino load ins can be a pain in the ass. We played in Atlantic City and this casino had a beach bar stage. We parked on the street as close as we could to the boardwalk and loaded our gear up the ramp and across the boardwalk. Then there was a short wooden path onto the beach, but it didn't go all the way to the stage. So for the last 100 feet or so you had to lift up everything and walk through the sand with our gear. Not fun especially when its hot as fuck in the summer and there's a shit ton of people hanging out on the boardwalk/beach who are also in your way and usually drunk or not paying attention.

Only upstair venues or even ground level venues I've ever visited has been the type where you primarily play acoustic sets. Or at least so that a half-stack with 4x12 cab would be way overkill.

Yeah, it's still like that.

The load in/out there was infamous, but a number of years back they invested in this equally insane tiered ramp system that they have to setup and break down all the time.

I’ve had they not like us on repeat since it came out. Kendrick is ending drake’s career with an entirely unnecessarily catchy track

I have no idea what you guys are talking about. I'm assuming modern RnB artists. Definitely from one of the lowly styles that make commercial photography look like an artform. Or it's hipping-hops, the thing which killed RnB by somehow making it worse. Whatever. Throw the bugger in a woodchipper and hug your kids.
