Thought you couldn't stain spalted maple?

Can you? This BRJ looks increeeedible! As best as I can tell it's stained spalted maple, which I thought wasn't supposed to come out looking good. But this thing looks hot!

From what the tape on the fretboard looks like it looks more like some kind of transparent spray paint to me. Still looks absolutly incredible!
