Just saw Shadow of Intent, Bleed from Within and parts from Heaven Shall Burn. All of them had a extremely good show, kinda felt sad for Shadow of Intent to not have that big of a support in the crowd (obvious bias). Thought they would be second and not first but whatever.

Bleed from Within with a nice Caparison (Horus?).

I saw Toxic Holocaust/Hammerhead in Brooklyn. Besides meeting Rob Gray and checking out his guitars (I've mentioned that in the RIP thread), I also met Dave Davidson there which was surprising to me to see him there just as a fan/concert goer.

Seeing Metallica the two night show next week in Dallas; thought I was done seeing them (this will be 4th time) but the no repeat thing got me

Excited to see Ice Nine Kills but they've become a meme now with their horror show material, it's all they play. It was cool for an album but now it's their entire identity. I prefer their older stuff.

Just saw Steve Vai last night. Great show, everyone was really locked in. It was a pretty small venue, so it was really cool to be that close up.

Best part was getting to watch my dad see Steve Vai. A 52 year old man fangirling is a beautiful sight. Would definitely recommend catching that tour!

Saw Queens of the Stone Age the other night in Portland, Maine. Wasn't loving the new material going-in, but it was still an awesome show.

I was just complaining to some friends that no bands ever play in our town. Well, now I noticed that the band Folkrim will be coming here in a couple of months. I'd never even heard of them before, so I checked them out and they seem pretty cool. Tickets cost less than a beer at the bar too.

I saw him last November, and have seen him quite a few times since '99 on The Ultra Zone tour, which was in the Fox in Boulder, very small, I think I was about 6 ft from Mr Vai for that show. Crap, I'm older than your dad...

Hoo boy. Concerts in 2023... Let's see how this goes... I wrapped up 2022 with Steve Vai. So far in 2023, I've seen Memphis May Fire, Parkway Drive, and Currents, Whiskey Myers and Jamey Johnson, and then Polyphia.

Next up is Coheed and Cambria, Cannibal Corpse and Mayhem in September, followed by TesseracT and DragonForce in October.

The Pelican show I was going to on the 9th was postponed the day before, due to a couple guys in the band being sick. Bummer for sure, but at least I can still look forward to seeing them.

The Manchester Orchestra show is coming up soon, pretty sure I'll get a ticket for that soon. Very cool band.

Also, Helmet will be at the same venue Pelican will be playing. Haven't seen them live since the mid 90's. Going with 2 friends I saw the 90's show with, so some cool nastalgia going on for this one. And being in such a small intimate spot, I'll hopefully be able to meet one of my early guitar heros.

The larger stadium show has a different feel than an arena show but it's still really cool. I think you'll have a blast. And Phil sounded sooooooo good. He let the crowd sing certain stuff like the first 2 choruses of A New Level (which was the opener). But he sang the 3rd chorus just fine and the rest of the night as well. He had good in between song banter as well. Not too long, not too short and said the right stuff. He looked like he was having fun and so did everyone in the band. Zakks tone was huge, Charlies drums were shaking everything inside of me, and Rexs bass sounded super solid. 10/10 from me man.

So this happened last weekend, and you're right, it was an absolute BLAST. Went both days. Metallica sounded amazing, and the fact that we got to hear 32 different songs of theirs over the two days is pretty incredible. The only heavy hitter they didn't play was The Unforgiven, which they've played before but seems this particular show they exchanged it for Sanitarium.

The energy of the stadium is incredible, though this particular stadium, being a completely closed roof stadium the shape of an egg, sounded absolutely HORRIBLE. Metallica did their best to EQ properly and sounded good, but every opening act sounded like hot garbage from where we were. It also didn't help that, on the first day, we were sitting front row on our section and the guard rail was a thick piece of glass that filtered out all the treble frequencies, unless we stood the whole time. The second day we sat a few seats up from the guard rail and the sound was noticeably better.

Pantera sounded like they were super tight, but I could barely tell what song they were even playing. That said, we kinda lost it during Walk, cause that's just what you do when that song hits. They opened with A New Level, which I wish I could have heard better, but at least I still got to see it live.

I could barely tell what Mammoth played, but what I could tell sounded really good; they're on my list of bands to properly check out now. On day 2, Ice Nine Kills sounded pretty cool, but I didn't really like their live act. If I wanna see American Psycho I'll just watch the movie at home. Five Finger Death Punch were... well, at one point before the last couple of songs we left to go to the bathroom and get some hotdogs and we waited it out. It was pretty cool to see Andy James ripping it on stage, but I'm just really not a fan of their music. Also, his new signature BC Rich looked as hideous on stage as it does on pictures.

Overall though, super enjoyable couple of days, and the festival vibes were strong. It was also kind of incredible how Metallica just took over the city. There was Metallica stuff EVERYWHERE, and for two days everyone downtown wore Metallica t shirts. The popup store was huge and PACKED. Every year in summer, Montreal hosts the largest international fireworks competition, where each country shows off a display of fireworks synchronized to music. The last day of the competition was the day before the first Metallica concert and they just played Metallica songs all throughout as an homage. It was awesome.

Finally got a chance to see Pantera - only had a marginal interest in them before, but the concert radically changed my opinion on them: amazing.

However, neglected to get a tour a shirt so if someone on here is seeing them live soon hit me up and I will make it worth your time.

Got my VIP Mastodon/Gojira show coming up on Saturday, should be a real barnburner

Great show, Mastodon performed great as always, but I think I have to give it to Gojira as the MVP; never seen em live but I've known they bring it, now it's confirmed.

Snagged two shirts after the meet and greet, the boys got to see my Crack the Skye inspired tattoo and get a photo with it (also a close up afterwards that may be used in promo material), as well as some casual conversation with them individually. All in all, a good night.

The Metallica experience this past weekend was interesting but my biggest takeaway is the sound was complete dogshit and I will never see a band in a stadium of that size ever again. Luckily Metallica is the only such band I enjoy for the most part.

Friday:
Wolfgang sounded great, very clean voice. However that's about all I could hear. Sound was progressively better from there but still awful.
Pantera - they were fine, I imagine the floor was place to be for that. Nothing blew me away, but it was great hearing these songs in person for first time. Zakk did some overly aggressive palm muting where it wasn't needed for a few riffs but otherwise did well.
Metallica's set was great on Friday it was a blast with except of the weird jam Rob and Kirk do (after which a guy behind me yelled that was fucking awful lol)

Sunday:
INK was amazing, but I was probably too far away to really get it. I actually enjoyed the stage act. Now I need to see them headline a small venue.
FFDP not my thing - although seeing Andy James shred was great and the mix was set up to where you could hear him do it.
Ended up sneaking down to 100 level (my seats were 200 level) for FFDP but got booted before Metallica. Sound was better in 100 level but still not great.
Metallica's set second night was weird. Opened up with Whiplash, For Whom Bell Tolls and Ride the Lightning! (which Kirk absolutely slayed the solo to my surprise). But after that, they played 4 in a row from the new album and even a St. Anger song - James introduced as "from your favorite album". They had to stop and restart the outro to one of the new songs.
The vibe was totally dead after that cluster of material and it took the entire rest of the night to build it back up.
If you just look at the setlist it seems okay but the flow of the show was ruined by the way it was ordered. If I had only seen Sunday I would be disappointed.

Overall mixed review, but it was still plenty of fun
