It's not like crowdfunding music is novel - lots of people have done that before too. The novel part, the new part, the sketchy part, is that this is an album that was already done before asking for money, supposedly. It's a product decades in the making, for which the choice of crowdfunding is awkward and unnecessary.Gaming industry might be the biggest one, and there are kickstarters which are counted in tens of millions.
Also - again - I've got some game industry knowledge - they're the last place anyone should look for advice on how to produce a viable product without stepping on the interests of their own consumers, or workers, or even their own interests, etc etc. Kickstarted games have whole youtube series' dedicated to their failures and problems.
