I was at the Salem, OR show last night. What I found amusing that Steve Vai brought three JEMs onstage but only one Pia (and his Hydra). Wonder if he just doesn't like his Pia as much as his JEMs.
Nah, the Pia is just a very new model and he has a 30+ year history with his JEMs. Not even the model line, but like individual guitars. He's never not gonna play Evo, Flo III, and any one of his specialty JEMs he's been playing forever (Bad Horsie in particular).

There was an interview with Steve's tech, apparently they, him and Steve, felt like bringing out some classics the last few tours.

What kind of issues were they having? Any other instruments having similar issues?

Lot of small things IIRC - bad paint issues, missing paint in routes/jack area, rough fret ends. Nothing that was major.

On the acoustic there were a ton of people posting their bridge was coming off the guitar completely.

... so you're the guy we have to talk to first before getting a new Ibanez so to know if the QC is good...? 😁
Always have been.
For 2 years almost every RG652AHMNGB was firewood, hump necks is their term. I'd have to go over and pick 2 out of 20 that were good enough to fret level and be safe. They kept telling me I was the only one complaining, nothing was going to happen. I'd get calls from players all the time that bought elsewhere trying to figure out why their guitars weren't playable, but no other dealers were complaining. I guess enough buyers actually called in to complain, the first container of AWD's that came in, they rejected every single one. Next batch they fixed the problem, but they made firewood for 2 years because no other dealers were complaining. You have to ask yourself, who was qualified at these dealers to even tell they were selling firewood, or care they were if they could.

To add to what Max and Alberto said, the recent rig rundown has Vai's tech reveal that his black Pia is basically modded to be just like Flo 3, right down to the Evolution pickup in the Utopia housing. Even Bo, which had Breeds forever has Evos now. And looking at recent photos of the Blue Powder Pia on G3 jams shows the same mods. The lack of Utopia housings on it cuts all the pretense too.

I think Vai has just reached that point where he's comfortable with just Evo and Flo 3 live till death do them part. And that's fine. The live Pias just show that he doesn't want to veer too far off his home base, or at least cherry picks which guitar resonates with him personally. His main black Pia wasn't even intended for touring, and he also used the envy green one on early Inviolate shows that he just doesn't bring on the road anymore. And with someone who's ears and artistic sense as fine tuned as Vai's, that's understandable.

Sidebar: the most striking part of that jam was Rai Thistlethwayte's vocals.

Bought a used RG652AHM NGB last summer and I fucking hate the thing. I thought I'd like it, but nope.

Why do you hate it?

I did not like the maple fretboard as much as I thought I would - I'm used to dark boards and it weirds my eyes out in person. Not a fan of the original Edge on this either - prefer Lo Pro. Can't get the damn thing setup properly with the usual amount of effort I put into used RGs . Also, the previous owner was an idiot. He tried to paint the saddles...while they were still attached to the bridge on the guitar. Also looked like he left the guitar half-buried in the sand and some parts were rusting.

Maybe I overreacted when I said I fucking hate it. It's more like I'm not its biggest fan and the previous owner's treatment of it made things far worse.
