Hey All,

I just wanted to ask what chord you guys thought was the hardest to learn when first learning to play, and if you had any tips on getting them right. I've been practicing seven basic chords and been having a bit of an issue trying to not to touch the other strings with my fingers. The one I'm having the most trouble with is the standard D chord (even though my guitar teacher says the F chord is the toughest, I don't find it as hard). I just can't seem to not touch a string I'm not suppose to touch.

Thanks :yesway:

There are some chords that Allen Holdsworth has used all 5 fingers for. (yes, I mean the Thumb fretting notes as well) I can't tell if the Shawn Lane one also used 5 fingers.

couldnt find a vid for it, but check this out

I am learning House of Mirrors at the moment, the hardest thing about it is remembering the 40+ chord shapes

I don;t think I would even begin to attempt it, I don't even have the fingers for it.

You guys are aiming way above the level of the OP and taking the thread title too seriously, methinks.

TS, try to keep your thumb round the back of the neck, and your hand relaxed. You want to keep your fingers gently curled and fret with the tips - this helps you get clear fretted notes and prevents muting strings by accident. :)

When I was starting out it took me forever to play barre chords cleanly, especially the Amaj shape one.

Nowadays I'd say it's learning all the possible inversions of each different seventh chord. It's not so much a physical issue as a mental one, especially once you start using them to play through a progression with good voice leading.

About not having fingers brushing the strings, I'd say that an open A chord is pretty tough when first starting out:

e-0-
B-2-
G-2-
D-2-
A-0-
E----

On another note, beyond even the evil Shawn Lane chord (I think it's an Fmaj9 in the second inversion):

e---0-----
B---6----
G---12---
D---10---
A---8----
E---5----

I find that this chord, from "Home" by Allan Holdsworth, resists my fingers:

e---
B-3-
G-4-
D-7-
A-4-
E-3-

Speaking of Home, the first in-tempo chord made me shelf the transcription -

I find that this chord, from "Home" by Allan Holdsworth, resists my fingers:

e-17-
B-14-
G----
D----
A-14-
E-17-

Actually, just checked the book, and it's

e-17-
B-14-
G----
D-14-
A-17-
E----
