I have a hardtail EVH that I would like to tune lower, like B/drop A. The tuner holes are fairly small, I think 56 was a tight fit IIRC. Can you recommend some locking tuners that would work for this headstock and can fit larger strings?

You would likely be able to drill or file the existing tuner to get it to fit. Easy job and saves you buying new tuners. If you drill - use eye protection!

Or unwind the uppar part of the string (between tuner and nut, never further).

I use Schaller M6 and I don't want to drill them. 56 is also their upper limit.

I just take pliers and undo the outer winding of the string. It's a bit of work but never had any problems with it.

I picked up 2 different sets for my hardtail Wolfgang standards. Wasn't an easy task due to the lack of info online and the fact that they're 2-pin locking tuners.

Best quality ones: Graph Tech PRL-8311-C0 (https://www.amazon.com/PRL-8311-C0-Graphtech-Sintonizadores-derecho/dp/B01JJXDTBA). I've put a .64 into the lower E with these, no issues.

Half the price but slightly tight fit: Tone Ninja 2-pin locking tuners 20:1 (https://www.ebay.com/itm/115923721220). I've put a .60 into the lower E on these, no issues.

Hope that helps!
